    Unhappy bilge pump

Bilge pump stopped working on recent 3 day trip. Recommendations on replacement pump, brand, volume, etc. would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone carry a back up pump on board? It was a rainy, windy fishing trip (inshore) and not having a bilge pump did make me a little uneasy.

Coast Guard recommended to me to always have some type of bucket on board.

Yep, I always keep a bucket on board, problem was even a small bucket will not fit into the bilge area for bailing. Solution, we cut the top out of a water bottle and used it when needed.
I've found a couple of hand pumps on-line, gonna get one as a back-up.

The bucket is basically an "oh zhit" bucket. Only to really be used in those moments of true underwear ruining proportions. If its just the bilge sump full, you aren't there yet lol.

Thats right That thing is barge of foam and fiberglass, a little rain won't hurt it.

I've been using an attwood sahara for the past season and a half and it has been good. But the bracket is plastic and it broke. Constantly pulling the pump out of the bracket to clean it probably caused that. Attwood sent me a new bracket, no charge.

Most of us lack enough Bilge pump Capacity / pumping power!

The 500gph pump in pop's 23 footer was not going to cut it , It's one of the newer RULE Auto pumps like come in skiffs.... I replaced a burnt up one with it a few years back... It's wired to the dash switch for man / auto selection ...

I wired the new 1100 Gpm up to the #2 batt. I used A fuse on the yellow wire just in case ...Also see the new threw hull

    Default bilge pump

I would change the bilge pump to 1100 GPH.I use the 500 GPH for live well only. I have rules and my 1100 is automatic, 500 manual of course.
No problem with these if you clean peroidically.

A few years ago I would say Rule 100%, not so much now. I'm currently waiting on warranty replacement for my 15 month old 750 GPH pump. (back up pump) Had a Rule 500 quit not too long ago.
Both of my original Johnsons still work. (750 live, 1200 bilge) I think I'll go that route on the next one. Pictures in my album of the set up.

The auto switch on my Johnson hasn't worked since day 1 (stays on when in auto unless you tap it with something), the dealer is replacing it tomorrow, but by next year, I will replace with a 1100 Rule Auto. Had 4 of those on my charter boat and never had problems with any of them.
