What type of rig and bait do you use for trolling Spanish? Please be descriptive and post pics.

I pull two small birds with about 12 foot leader to two #00 or #1clark spoons. And maybe one on a #1 planer or trolling sinker behide a pretty good rod.Have used yozuri crystal minnows.

Clarkspoons, preferably the size the fish are feeding on, long, (25-30 feet) light (15 lb or less) leader, in-line sinker (1-4 oz) or Sea Striker #1 planer, and a rod that is heavy enough to pull the weight of the sinker/planer. Troll at 5-6 knots. If you find fish (or birds) working, work carefully from the outside of the school, moving closer and with caution so as to keep the fish from sounding and moving half mile away. You should be able to google up something with the key words "clarkspoon spanish mackerel rig". Good topic for our round table discussion and demonstration at our first monthly meeting... ;D

It's also a ton of fun when you find them to go to light spinning tackle and cast to em. Also in trolling if you're only catching blues, speed up a bit.

You're right about that lakebiker - it's a hoot. Probably the #1 reason folks don't catch spanish (all else considering) is trolling too slow - it's hard to troll (or crank a reel) too slow for spanish. Kings, OTOH will take a spoon, even down to 2 or 3 knots, so long as the speed is sufficient so the spoon is working right. Another tip, now that I'm here ;D if you think you're in the zone but not getting bit, throttle up and/or make a radical (not to radical) change in course -often this sparks a strike.

Thanks guys for the kind words! He did end up with a new rig. Santa brought him his very own Ugly Stik complete with Okuma reel and a new tackle box! The kid loves it.

Couldn't resist posting a picture of my son after seeing the photo above. There's nothing better than taking your son fishing. Jack loves it. He's 5 1/2 and will stay on the boat all day. Got him a spinning outfit and he's pretty good at casting.

If these photos aren't "where it's at"... I don't know what is!

I am taking my boy out Saturday, he asked what I wanted for my birthday, I told him a few hours on the water with him is all I need!
He is so excited. We will hit our honey hole again and see what kind of luck we have.

Good Job Yellow, enjoy that boy!

Thats just awesome! both my kids love fishing. My son is 14 and my daughter is 11. Surprisingly enough, my doughter loves to fish more than my son. Don't get me wrong though, he likes to fish, it's just that she's hardcore.

My daughter is 14, my oldest son is 16.She always outfishes my 16 year old.But the true fisherman is my youngest son(11), he is like me, all day with rod on his hand, and he knows his knots too.
