1stSgtUSMCRet - AKA Dave,

I enjoyed the boat trip today. What model Scotty rod holders do you have? After I got home, I went to www.scotty.com to see what they offer. I kinda like the looks of the STRIKER model. Take a look at them and tell me what you think. If any other CSO members are using them, please comment on them as well. Here's the link: http://www.scotty.com/marine/products/product/rodholders/striker.html

Hi Will,

Harry got me hooked on the Attwood Pro series holders. They hold a spinner or conventional reel well. I use them mostly when chunking bunker or fishing clams for stripers while at anchor. There is a thread or 2 about them here on the site.

They look very similar to the Scotty rod holders. Thanks for the info.

I had this set on my last boat. I will also consider these on my new boat as well. I had these in white, so they go well with the boat.

I got ‘em from Cabela’s, Will - made by Scotty. Drilled the size holes they suggested and the flush mounts fit perfect. They fit every rod I own, most of ‘em of the salt water variety. Got the hardware from Havelock Building Supply –they carry more SS hardware than most marine supply houses (ie. West Marine, Boater’s World, etc.) and much cheaper. No problem with rust either – been buying my SS nuts, bolts, screws there for 15 years or better.

I like um a lot! I remembered you said you got um from Cabelas, but wasn't sure about the model. So, they are the "Quick Draw" model - They look like they will accept both baitcaster and spinning reels. Slick setup!

Thanks-
Will

Yep, that's the one. You may have a problem getting a baitcasting rod in the holder if it's the kind with a trigger on it and gets fat at the very end. I have a couple left over from my bass fishin', baitcastin' days that have a short rubber handle, trigger style butt on them that won't fit any rod holder I'm aware of. Because of that, I haven't bought one with that style handle in more than 20 years, I guess.

I bought the attwood, basically the same thing as scotty's. Plus I liked the flush mount that they sit in instead of the surface mount that comes with them.More $$ but not in the way, when not using the rod holders.

Harry,

I like the way that the rod in positioned in the Attwood rod holder, allowing the eyelets and rod absorb the resistance of trolling in a natural manner. I wonder if the Scotty rod holders are designed the same way? It's hard to tell from the pictures I've seen of them. Do you think the Attwood rod holders will withstand the strike of a Big King?

Thanks,
Will

Sure, unless your using 50lb power pro and have the drag locked or get tip wrapped .... 001

Will, I think all the holders (so far shown) are likely to be made out of the same material, and maybe from the same OEM - all very durable and salt water proof, and IMO strong enough for any fish strike, considering what Harry said. All rotate 360 degrees and pivot while in the trolling position.

I chose the ones here because I liked the way the holder pivots (at the rear) when you want to make a quick hook set or rod retrieve – no need to lean out or stretch yourself away from the boat to pull the rod out of the front of the holder. All you have to do is grab the rod and pull up - the holder pivots and the rod pulls out of the holder in one very quick, smooth, and natural motion. Cabellas was out of white when I ordered mine but I think the black looks OK and matches my (cheap but functional) black rod holders mounted to the sides of my console.
