View Full Version : Boat Ramps - Crystal Coast Area
There are seveal public (free) boat ramps in the area - here are some I know about. If you know of any more, and care to reveal them, please let us know.
Morehead City Ramp - at the Visitors Center a few blocks west of the Atlantic Beach Bridge, right off Hwy 70.
Beaufort Airport Ramp - Near the corner of Turner Street and W. Beaufort Rd - From Morehead City traveling East on Hwy 70, take the first street (Turner) after crossing over the Beaufort Draw Bridge and go to the stop sign at W. Beaufort Rd - turn left on W. Beaufort Rd., turn left again (about 100 feet down the road) into the ramp access area. *009* This is the "new" and much improved access ramp... opened in May 2009.
Taylors Creek Ramp - This ramp is in Beaufort. From Morehead City, Take Hwy 70E to Beaufort and turn right on Lennoxville Rd. Go about 3 miles to the tennis courts on the right and turn in to the access area.
Lawson Creek, Neuse River (New Bern area) - At the west end of the Trent River (also known as the Freedom Memorial) Bridge, take the Pembroke Rd exit off Hwy 70 and then take the first right on Rhem Rd down to the waterfront ramp. There are actually two ramps here, one to the left as you drive in and another strait away to the end of the road.
Hancock Creek - From Hwy 70, take Hwy 101 out of Havelock and go about 6 miles and turn left onto Cahooque Creek Rd - there's a small wildlife access sign on the right side of the Hwy just before you get to Cahooque Creek Rd. Follow this road until you see the wildlife access sign, then turn left onto the dirt road leading to the ramp.
If you have access to the military bases, there are 3 ramps aboard MCAS Cherry Point (Havelock) that will put you out on Slocum Creek or Hancock Creek. There's also a ramp aboard MCALF Bogue Field (on Hwy 24, 2 miles east of Hwy 58) that'll give you access to the waters around Emerald Isle, Bogue Inlet and Swansboro. This is a narrow, shallow water ramp and I don't particularly recommend it, unless you can't find something better in this area - I believe there is a public ramp just west of Hwy 58 (off Hwy 24) but I've not used (or seen) it.
Dave
*009* Ed has created, and has posted this link to a nice, "active map", showing these and many more of the CCC of CSO Boat Ramps: ActiveMap (http://www.communitywalk.com/north_carolina_crystal_coast/ccc_of_cso_boat_ramps/map/372046)s
Note that this map view defaults on the geographical view of the ramp locations. To get directions, showing streets, roads, and highways, scroll down to the desired ramp and click on the "car" icon that is provided next to each ramp listing.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc188/djerhart/RampCarIcon.jpg
You should then be provided with a information screen similar to the image below. Click on the "Get Directions" button.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc188/djerhart/Ramp-GetDirections.jpg
The program will generate a new window where you can review a street/road map and/or type in your starting address and the program will give you driving directions to the ramp.

In addition to the ramps Dave listed, I know of one other.
Havelock: It's located on Hwy 101 (Havelock end of town) - Where Hwy 101 meets the Hampton Inn. The easiest way to locate it is to drive to the Hampton Inn using Hwy 70, the ramp is located just off the two-lane bridge (Hwy 101), right of the Hampton Inn. I think that body of water is considered a branch of Slocum Creek.
Will
You're right Will, I forgot that one; it is the headwaters of Slocum Creek. Referencing Hwy 101 may be misleading since there is no reference to Hwy 101 (though GoogleEarth shows that road as Hwy 101) on the ground when you are driving this road in Havelock. Most folks consider that hwy 101 ends at Hwy 70 near the Cherry Point main gate. So I'm gonna say this ramp location is better described as being on the far north end of Church Road, where it turns into a service road off the East bound side of hwy 70 - it is very near the Hampton Inn. No matter which direction you are coming from on hwy 70, this ramp is best accessed by turning off hwy 70 at the Hampton Inn exit.
I tried to navigate it (this fall) from below and gave up long before I got to the highway 70 ramp. Little too narrow, skinny, real black water, with a few too many invisible obstacles in it for me - but I do have a civilian acquaintance (son of a good friend) that uses that ramp to get to the larger body of Slocum with his 12' aluminum john boat. He fishes a lot near ski beach.

Also a free ramp around the Stacy area on 70 as well as the ramp at the Cedar Island Ferry landing. Both a little north but still, Crystal Coast.

lakebiker, is the one near Stacy by the end of the bridge on the inshore side - if so I recall passing that one several times on my way to Harkers Island or Davis.
Which reminds me - there is a ramp at the end of the Harkers Island Bridge, but lately I've been using the ramp on Taylor's Creek to go out to the Cape - it's very close to the same distance on the water (to the Cape) and much shorter drive (for me) to the ramp.

That's the one Dave, it's kind of between Davis and Stacy (best this ole feeble mind can remember) on the right going north. I always pass it on the way to Portsmouth Island. The state just finished a complete overhaul on it, looks nice but, I've never used it.

Wes, I think the one you mentioned in Beaufort by the airport is the one I listed in Beaufort at the corner of Turner and W. Beaufort.
The ramp at Calico Jacks is the closest ramp to Cape Lookout Bight, a 7.5 mile run. I’ve been out of it many, many times but not in several years, since my buddy “Turkey” retired and they sold to new owners. Harkers Island Fishing Center (about a mile before you get to Calico Jacks) also has a pay ramp ($12.00).

There's also Mr Eugenes, "down town" Atlantic, just past the grocery store going north on ya right in addition to Morris Marina. An old fish house/sea food business, some campers on site but not much of anything else. His ramp is actually a little easier to use than Morris and usually not as crowded. Please, be carefull in that area as it looks like you have plenty of water everywhere you look but it shallows up REAL quick outside the waterway. My favorite place's on the OBX. Oh yeah, if you're hungry, Morris Marina has the best cheese burgers and cold ones in the area.

Ya got me on that one tootall. I've been going to that area since 82 and have never even seen a dredge. Another thing, you CANNOT depend on any charts as to getting into any of the inlets, Drum, New Drum and the "new" one on the north end of Davis Island. I believe that place changes every time the tide changes. Best bet if you're going to try and go off shore or try to get to either of the inlets, try and find someone to follow. Even with my jackplate I spend as much time pulling my boat as I do driving it sometimes. It's a great area, just very tricky.

That must be up around Beaufort or Harkers Island. All the big boats around
Atlantic either have to go out of Ocracoke, Bardens or Beaufort. There are a few "locals" that know the way out of the new inlet on the north end of Davis, mostly sport fisher boats but I don't know for sure what they are calling the Atlantic Harbor. Maybe some of the locals can tune in on this one. 006
TooTall, there's a small ramp at the side of the road about 2 miles east of Davis, NC. Traveling east on 70, turn left (east) at the "T" (stop sign) in Davis, go over the first bridge, and just before you go over the second bridge, pull off the right side of the road - right where the Davis Shrimp House and Dock used to be (before it burned down). There is (or was - haven't been out there for over 3 years) a crab house on the far end of that bridge. It's easy to drive right by and overlook this ramp; it's little used, but a skiff's easy enough to launch there. Though I've personally not ramped a skiff here, I've seen many larger boats use this dirt ramp. Parking enough for at least half a dozen truck/trailer rigs though I've rarely seen more than 2 use this ramp in any one day. You can see core banks from the bridge/ramp. The flounder fishing around that bridge was a super hot spot in years past, when the shrimp and crab houses were in full operation. They dumped their byproduct in the water next to the houses and when the current was moving, the fish moved into the relatively small channel leading in and out of the waters under the bridge. Still not a bad fishing hole, just not like it used to be. I plan to make a trip or two out of that ramp this year.

Wes
Wes, that's the one koolj heard about from his PIL, it think. The article speaks of the Newport River Public Water Access, which is the area at the east end of the Morehead City/Beaufort High Rise Bridge. The access is on the left side of the road, just as you drive over the bridge near Radio Island - a very good location for a boat ramp. Depending on exactly where they put the ramp, (unlike the Morehead City Visitor’s Center access area) this area could offer very good protection from summer’s prevailing winds.

There's also a nice ramp at cedar point campground in sea level if you want to fish core sound and drum inlet. It's not free but is the best choice for the furthest inlet to the south. As for the north inlet, was there two weeks ago and could walk all the way across about two hundred yards behind the inlet.

There is a free ramp located 1/4 mile east of Dudley's Marina on the ICW in Cape Carteret. Have to get there early, limited parking and tight maneuvering on the weekends. Good access to White Oak river spots, Swansboro, and Bogue Inlet or Bear Island if you just want to beach it and have the beach all to yourself (drum fish).
There is also a rumor that is gaining momentum that the Island Harbor Marina in EI will not have the lease renewed next year and will be converted to dry stack and private condo slips. Again, this is just a rumor at this point, but I have been hearing it more often.:secret:

Ed, did you get out to see the Shell Rock Landing Ramp south of Swansboro - see post #12. That's the best public ramp in the area that I know of - Gunnar showed it to me earlier this summer. It puts you out in the ICW real close to Queens Creek and Bear Inlet and about midway between the EI bridge and Browns Inlet at CamLej. Last time I went to the boat ramp in Beaufort at the airport it was closed and (gasp) almost looked like they were taking it out? Anyone know anything about that? And the ramp between Stacy and Davis is called Oyster Creek if I'm not mistaken. I put in there about a month ago for the first time and spent most of the day under the bridge dodging rain. It's a "fishy" looking place though. I'll be trying it again. And there is another ramp under the high rise bridge at Sea level where 70 and 12 split. It goes to the Neuse on one side (North, and a LONG way) and out to core sound to the south.
Capn, my understanding (of the sign leading into the site) is that it's closed for repair. I visited the ramp from the waterway last weekend and they were pulling up the concrete and docks. I believe that ramp is owned by the city of Beaufort. New ramp docks were built not long ago but they are too high for good and safe use of most small boaters, especially for those that fish (and ramp) by themselves. The concrete ramps themselves are short with a steep drop-off, and the one on the outside has much of the concrete broken with deep holes in it, short of the drop-off. I can't be for sure but I think the ramp is being repaired/replaced because of liability issues for the city... many use this ramp, problematic as it is, because it is closest to prime inshore fishing areas.
On cold fall and winter mornings, early starters can expect to have ice in their boats and the docks will be slippery with frost or ice. The two or three foot drop from the docks to the skiff (especially on low tide) is an accident waiting to happen, and I've gotta believe some have already happened due to this fact.
The last time Teresa and I ramped there, it was a frosty morning. We were tied up at the end of the dock (away from the ramps) and I had just returned from parking the truck/trailer. As I was about to pull away from the dock, I happened to be looking at a man that was holding a line tethered to another boat that had just ramped. He was standing on the low dock next to the walk ramp leading to the high docks, smoking a cigar and waiting for the other fellow that was parking his truck/trailer. He took one step toward the edge of the dock, as he was pulling on the line to bring the bow of the small boat toward him and the dock, and he slipped and slid (feet first) right off the dock and into the water, which was a little deeper then he was tall. He emerged, hat drifting away, cigar still in his mouth, and hurriedly climbed back on the dock before I could even make the 10 or so steps over to him to help.
I assumed he was the fishing partner of the fellow that had ramped the boat but he said he was just helping the guy ramp his boat. Talking with the wet fellow, I learned he was a city worker, on duty with a city truck, and he just happened to be down at the docks that morning. As you might expect, it was cold that morning, the water temp was in the 50s and I'm fairly certain he had to return home to change closes, necessitating that he report the incident to his supervisors. Could be a coincidence, but the next week when we returned there to ramp our boat, we found it was closed for repair... it's been about a month now, I think. I hope it opens soon - it's a long "no wake" ride to the haystacks from the Taylor's Creek ramp.

Ed, I mentioned that ramp in the last paragraph of post #1 on this thread. The ramp is very little used so you won't have any problem with ramp traffic. Parking is no problem either - almost nobody uses the park, the dock, or the ramp. Here are the GE numbers, but be advised, there is a lot of shallow water between the ramp and the main channel. OTOH, I don't know of another ramp that will put you out in that area, which has some pretty good, nearby island beach areas and considerable fishing spots between it and the EI bridge.
Ramp: 34°41'20.33"N 77° 1'13.73"W
Dock: 34°41'16.08"N 77° 1'9.31"W
Park: 34°41'18.96"N 77° 1'7.53"W
Main Channel: 34°41'7.38"N 77° 1'2.90"W
Island Beaches: 34°41'5.56"N 77° 0'58.08"W
34°41'9.87"N 77° 0'44.29"W
Capn Luke, I've been keeping an eye on the ramp near Radio Island but haven't seen any progress being made to build it yet... thought they were going to start building it this past spring/summer *006* When/if it gets built, I'll be one of the first to use it ;D My understanding, it's supposed to go in somewhere about here: 34°43'29.04"N 76°41'4.65"W

The ramp at Cedar Point, Hwy 24 West isn't too bad. Not steep but the parking is a little iffy sometimes. If you launch this ramp check for boat traffic before backing down. It is a relatively narrow channel and the big boys love to go flying through there leaving a wake that will trailer-sink you in a heartbeat or drive your bow into your truck bed.

Just in case you all did not know, the ramp aboard Ft Macon Coast Guard station can be used by any government ID card holder. (Active duty, Retired, civilian contractor) It can be used for 5 dollars a day or 25 dollars for the whole year. Good ramp that is protected. They also have a hose there that you are allowed to wash your boat when you return.
34.697171, -76.681507
Ed, do you have a connection there that can give you a little more specific information. Is the ramp open for use 24/7 or is it restricted to certain (daytime) hours? How about weekdays. Last time (a couple months ago) I tried to get on the CG station, the sentry told me I could only fish aboard the station on the weekends. I wasn't trying to use the ramp, only asking to go do a little fishing from their sea wall. I used to fish aboard the station years ago (before 911 and the tightening up of station security) and would have to log in and out with the OOD.

We launched from there this weekend. They told me that you have to be back by 2100.
Here is a number you can call.
252-247-4583
Thanks Ed. Here's what I was able to learn from a conversation with a seaman at the CG station.
1) Active, retired military, and DOD personnel can purchase an annual boat ramp sticker for 25.00 from the comm center on their first visit to the station.
2) The gate is not normally manned on the weekends and holidays. The gate is manned, starting sometime between 0700-0800 on normal work days (Mon-Fri).
3) Although the gate may not be manned upon your arrival, there is a phone on the outside of the gate that can be used to call the comm center to ask for someone to come out and let you through the gate *018* There is a 3-digit number in the phone box that will get you a direct line to the comm center.
4) You must file a float plan with the comm center before launching, and though I didn't ask, I'm reasonably certain you must check out with them upon your return.
5) Once aboard the station, you can exit the gate at any time, without assistance of a gate keeper/sentry, as the gate is has one way locking mechanism.
In summary, this is a most ideal place to ramp... provided you are fortunate enough to be eligible to use this facility. The annual fee is more than reasonable. It appears that you can arrive and gain access at most any reasonable time you might want to launch, 7 days a week, and you can depart (without assistance) whenever you get back in from your fishing/boating trip. Provided there in no lengthy wait to gain access to the station, checking in and out should cause only a minor delay, and filing a float plan with the CG ain't a bad idea anytime you go out, and a most appropriate thing to do if you go offshore.

To add to what Dave posted.
Once the $25 is paid if you elect that route, you fill out a responsibility sheet and info of your vessel. You will need to have your registration and proof of insurance with policy number. They will give you a sticker to leave on your dash or stick to your vehicle if you choose.
The float plan is as simple as walking up the steps, signing your name and where you are going. When you return, you fill the time in.
To make it easier, if you come in, there is a phone on the wall near the ramp that you can call them and they will check you in.
Parking is a little wierd there. They basically tell you to park in the grass on top of the hill or anywhere that does not impede traffic.

Be sure and read post #3, before using this ramp. It's a good ramp, with limited parking, but very difficult (to impossible) to navigate your way to lower slocum creek in all but the smaller skiffs... where most of our members probably want to go. For those not able to access MCAS Cherry Point, the best bet is to use the Cahooque Creek ramp (listed as "Hancock Creek" on post #1) and make the run from Hancock Creek, west up the south side of the Neuse River, (dodging the crab pots) 3 miles until you get to the mouth of Slocum Creek. So long as their is a south wind, (or little wind) this stretch of the Neuse is easily navigable by small craft - the water is protected by the higher elevation of MCAS Cherry Point along this stretch of river. Note that you should stay at least a hundred yards off shore (to avoid sand bars and nearshore obstacles) while making this river run.

Sorry Dave, I relinked it. The link I sent was a zoomed in version. I relinked it with the zoomed out version. If you open it, look to the left side you will see numbers with more ramps. For some reason, Slocum seems to be the defualt one.
Try this link.

Outstanding job on the ramp maps Ed. I had started something similar with Google Earth but never finished it. I'm gonna edit the first post on this thread to point folks to your post *Cheers* Looks like you have most (if not all) the ramps shown. As we get more, maybe you could add them to your active map link.

This will be my first contribution to the site and group. We have a nice ramp we like to use in Atlantic Beach that is public. It may only come of use to people with places in AB or people doing weekday fishing trips. Its right over the bridge at the end of the canal Chasin Tails bait shop is on. This would be the canal that runs behind the businesses on the right after you go across the bridge. Turn right on the first street Moonlight and its right there. There is only parking for maybe 3 trucks and trailers so parking is a problem. It's convenient for us because we have a trailer around the corner with no dock or lift. Try not to tell too many people because I like how its not that busy. I make good use of it during the fall fishing for trout. I can put in, park, and get my bait all in one stop.
Welcome aboard i8a *Cheers* I have used that ramp on Sundays during the winter, when many of the area businesses are closed for the day, so I have a place to park my vehicle/trailer. Certainly not a ramp you can count on using (because of the limited parking) but nonetheless, one worth a try on certain days and/or time of year. Best thing about this ramp is, (as you mentioned) you can get live bait at Chasin Tails B&T on the way out *thumbsup*

Nice Ramp! Is it going in near the Island Harbor Marina, as was planned a few years ago?
The new ramp over at Radio Island should be opening soon also.

I may have a chance to shoot over, spend 3 nights with 2 days on the water, and 4th day shoot back up the mountain in April. Can anyone suggest a safe motel in the ccoast area to sleep/park rig at night that is near a ramp and get something to eat/diner, etc at night?*rod*

Well maintained wildlife ramp in Brice's Creek near New Bern. Quick run to the New Bern Bridges on Neuse River. Smooth, black water with plenty of trees to block the wind. Great bass fishing back in the creek. Parking is always plentyful. There is a campground with restrooms. Not used much. I fished it all last spring and hardly ever saw another boat.
