I just purchased a 218DLV today at the boat show today. I am looking at gps combo units and need advice on the garmin 498c versus the new garmin units. I am somewhat familiar with lowrance but I am not set on either one. Thanks for your help.
I have a 498c and love the GPS portion. Both Fillet and I have had problems with the units as far as the fishfinder portion failing.
Here is the link to that topic. I would read it and decide for yourself. I'm still not unhappy that I bought the 498c.

I had the 498c and it went when I sold the boat. I liked the ease of use, and just bought the new 540s garmin. Unfortuantly the new boat doesn't come in until the end of the month ..... 001
The DLV don't seem to have the issue's the flat bottom DLX and others have when it comes to reading bottom at speed. I had a little trouble once, but it was just a matter of tiliting the transducer up a click or two, and all was well again.

I just got my 498c in the mail saturday. I got it from Boe Marine online. It was 473.00 with the internal ant. I bought it because of the price and the 5" screen over the 4" screen on the 440s. I was a little concerned about the issues with the transucer not working but ever though it has been discountinued it still has the 1 year warrenty and I may get the extended warrenty if I can for 59.00 so I figured I could get my moneys worth out of it for a few years.

I think it was Rich (Fillet1) They sent him a new one I think.

Nope, I'm not keen on having to send it back and being without one. I'm thinking about getting a Furuno combo unit as I like their fishfinder better. Then I'll send the Garmin in to get it fixed. Being without a GPS for a few weeks just don't sit right with me. I'll use the Garmen for the GPS and the Furuno for the sonar.

Mine has worked fine since I returned it to Garmin. They sent me a new unit and transferred all of my old data to it. Their service is great imo. I have been a Garmin user for a long time now and feel they have the best GPS over all others, including Northstar, Raymarine, Furuno etc. Ideally I'd like a Garmin GPS with a Furuno finder, but the space on the skiff prevents that. So if i am stuck with a all in one unit I'll take the better GPS over the better finder.
