Has anyone used a drift sock? I would like to know your yeas and nays and any do's
and don'ts. I was told when used on the side of boat it would lean over. I just got one for christmas. Box says it is for boats to 26ft. I have a 238DLV . 006

I have one for my 198dlv. It will slow your drift down when the tide is ripping or when the wind is pushing you around. It also is a good emergency tool if your engine dies in a storm. Deployed off the bow it will hold the bow into the waves to prevent taking one over the side.

My skiff drifts stern to the greatest force either wind or tide. I can correct that somewhat with the sock.

I attached a second line to the loop at the point of the cone. Use that rope to pull it in- its much easier.

I use a 5 gallon bucket. Works like a charm. I also use it for slowing my trolling speed when the trout want a slow bite.

Those 5 gallon buckets have hundreds of uses. This a new one for me. Saves me the cost of a drift sock. I'll have to figure out a way of securing it to a line because the handles sometimes come off.

Thanks

Aubrey,

You can splice a 3 strand rope handle to a 5 gal bucket instead of the metal one. I did 2 buckets one rainy day in an hour or so. They are great.

Fillet1,

Nice job. Can you explain or offer a website that shows in detail how you made your rope?

Will

There are a bunch of sites like animated knots .com but here's one:

I don't know how to splice the line the way this guy did, but it certainly looks professional. I do know a Navy Bosun's Mate who could probably do that. I've never met one of those guys who didn't have a marlin spike laying around for this type of thing.

We had to splice ropes that way back in my electrician days when pulling big wire. The term we used was "serving" the rope. It's not hard to do, kinda like basket weaving... just need a little time and patience. Pretty job fillet1!

how much line do you let out when you drift with your bucket and can you fish the shore line
with this set up.

All this creativeness gives me an idea for a contest. The 1st one to build a complete flats fishing skiff from crap laying around in their garage / shop gets 1st dibs on buying Harry's returned JVX20. Let's get those entries started ;D

Fillet,

The spliced handle on the bucket is a great idea. I'll now have to develop splicing skills.

Thanks,
Aubrey
