I'm looking to purchase a new DLX178 I'm thinking of purchasing a 90HP Evinrude E-tec.
Anyone of good or bad things to say about this outboard...

I'm considering this Outboard for the following reasons 5 year warranty included with purchase (for limited time only)
Also, no break-in needed.. No maintenance for 3 years.. Evinrude states Low noise and Less fuel used.

Thoughts anyone?

I have the 75 E-tec on my 1780 dlx. It is an 05 model E-tec on a 2007 hull. This is the same motor as the 90 hp, but different fuel curve.

I only have one season on my E-tec as the motor sat up for 2 yrs. I love it. In my opinion, this motor is about a perfect match for the hull. with the extra uumph of the 90, you should have no problem loading the 1780 with any amount of equipment or friends.

I have operated small outboards and boats for 30 years, from the old Johnson 70hp 3-cylinder carb to a 150 v6 ocean-runner, the 75 E-tec sounds good, starts instantly, and uses little fuel. I had my engine set up to run on the xd evinrude synthetic oil, supposed to use less oil this way. So far, no problems with my E-tec. Good luck with your choice.

I have an E-tec 90 on my 198DLV and have loved every minute of operating it. It gets on plane quick and moves the boat right along. Unfortunately, while sitting on trailer it has started spitting out 2 stroke from somewhere around the oil pump. ??? It only does it on very rainy days so maybe it has something to do with barometric pressure. Anyway I have air bubbles in one of my oil lines and have lost about 3 tablespoons of oil combined the two times it has happened. I think the line with bubbles has a bad connection to the oil pump and will try to take it to the dealer on Monday if they're open . I hope this isn't a trend with this motor because I'm really impressed with it's performance and noise level.

Good article comparing 90 HP outboards at this link. http://www.bwbmag.com/output.cfm?ID=943183 BTW, One editor picked Suzuki and the other picked E-tec as the best.

Here's a really great article discussing e-tec outboards.

Too bad CS didn't sell in So. California when the author started his project. I think a 178 DLV would have done a good job meeting his needs.

Thanx for the link to the great article, Gator. I've seen the infomercial - they really did a great job with it. Made me wonder why anyone would buy a 4-stroke with all the extra weight and complexity (but I did - no choice - it came with the used J16 I bought)...
