Has anyone had a bad experience with a Zuki DF90hp?
Also does anyone have a DF90 on there DLX1780?
If so, what is your WOT speed with this motor on a DLX1780 and how many people on board at that speed?
thanks 003

Welcome to the site !!!
I just sold my 2007 198 DLV w/ 90 hp suzuki no problems loved it. I'm getting the 2008 238 DLV w/140 Suzuki in a month or so. ;D
My buddy had the 2006 1780 DLX with a 2007 90 Suzuki, pushed the boat real nice, around 25-30 MPH at WOT

Had a bad experience w/ a DF 70. This should be a heads up to many: don't wait for a water cooling impeller failure - do preventative maintenance, ie. change the impeller every 2 to 3 years. Why? in the case of my DF 70 which I bought used, it was unable to come apart!! The driveshaft was frozen to the crank. Attempts to drop the lower unit by a mechanic resulted in a cracked midsection. We were never able to remove the lower unit, so long story short, the engine had to be scrapped. Yes, the engine had been used exclusively in salt water (NC). Heard afterwards that this isn't uncommon w/ Suzuki. The engine was an '00; the attempt (1st time) to take apart was in '05. If I ever buy another used saltwater engine, I'd make the purchase contingent on documentation that the lower unit was recently dropped or could come apart prior to purcahse.

I would expect around 40-45 WOT with a correctly propped and rigged 90 on a 1780 DLX. I get over 35 with a 90 on my 198 DLV which is already a heavier and less efficient hull even before adding the 2 extra feet in length.

I had a smilar problem with an old Merc years ago that was my fault because I did not drop the lower unit however, I had and OLD Merc mechanic friend who took a 2" hole saw, cut a hole in the leg, tourched the drive shaft into, lower unit came off. He was then able to get the driveshaft out of the head, replace the shaft, impeller, reinstall, patched the hole, all was good.
It was a little pricy for the time but, it was a lot less expensive than than a new engine. This method can still be used today IMHO.
NO problems with the 4 stroke stuff but I do have a pal that's got a Suzi 70 F and he says it likes spark plugs but, he usually only slow trolls or fishes brush piles and never "blows" it out.

Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, TOhatsu, Mercury, and BRP manuals want you to change WP impellor every 100 hrs. or yearly.
Whichever comes first. Impellor may not be bad yet, but the bolts in the gearcase can start to have electrolosys and galvanic corrosion after just 1 year on any motor. So, at the very least, pull those damn bolts out and grease them up before re-inserting. One of the cheaper ways to protect your investment.
By the way, what the heck is this???? 003

My DF90 is SERIOUSLY problematic. So much so that the dealer recently swapped it out for a different 2008 Suzuki DF90.
Here is the deal. Run the motor like any normal fisherman would, say 10-15 minutes from the point of launch to your first fishing hole. Spend an hour or so fishing. Then you decide to move to another spot. Fire up the engine, let it idle while we haul in gear and set course for next hole. 30 seconds after coming up to speed, the engine just shuts off. Plain & simple it just shuts down. Now after 3 weeks of my NEW 2008 boat being in the shop, the SUZUKI Tech Rep Mr. Walt Proctor says this is NORMAL!!!
Mister Tech Rep claims the engine is "heat soaking" or "vapor locking". He also claimed that pumping the priming bulb before starting will help! WHAT? Did this clown hear what is happening? It runs fine for a minute or two, THEN dies. If it were "heat soaked" or "vapor locked" it wouldn't run at all would it? Not only is that the stupidest thing I have ever heard, after an hour or hour and a half there is that much heat in that engine on a cold December 24th day? Please Mister Tech Rep, not all of us are that stupid. To prove or more accurately DISPROVE Walt's moronic thought process, the dealer tried my motor with an oil cooler and cowling from the 140. Still no change. They ran it with NO cowling, no change! You cannot tell me that after 1.5 hours of sitting still on a cold December day that 45 seconds of idling and 30 seconds of 3/4 throttle is enough to heat up this engine to the point of "heat soaking" or "vapor locking"!!!
So potential Suzuki buyers beware... if your motor constantly dies out, it's NORMAL according to Suzuki.
And my 2008 CS 20 JVX, in calm water conditions with the DF90 (when it runs!) and a stock 19P Alum prop runs about 35-38mph on GPS fully loaded to the gills and 2 people on board. It runs 37-39mph with a 18P SS prop but has a much better holeshot.
