Hey guys,

I thinking about buying two new reels. I cannot decide between the 50VSW or 50VSX. Is the extra line capacity of the wide ever really needed (i do plan on trying for some bluefin this winter). Any other recommendations?

Thanks

I have 6 30VSW and 6 50VSW, the ones i use the most are the 30's for pretty much everything, the 50's i love only for shark fishing and swordfishing, 50's are kinda too heavy for me though.

Hey
Iam with NEM on the 30's so much more versital...if worried about line capacity load them with power pro braided line and a good flourocarbon dual shock or bimmini leader....BoogieBlues

Beach Bum, I have AVET's. I know this will open a can of worms and of course this is personal preferecnce. The AVET Pro EXW30/02 is the only way to go for me. They are lighter than the Penns by about 1 pound. They have way more drag, they hold way more line, and they are cheaper. (than the VSX's) They are also made in th UNITED STATES. I am not sure Penn products are all made in the US anymore. We fish for Yellowfin predominately but also wahoo, blackfin, or wahtever else. I am confident that the 30/02 EXW with up to 50 pounds of drag with 500 yds of 130# Jerry Brown Hollow Core and 150 yards of 80# mono top shot could handle any bluefin that you will hook. IMO 50's are just too big and heavy for standup fishing regardless of the manufacturer. That being said....you are not holding 50 or 40 or even 30#'s of drag standup fishing..

Here are some pics from our last trip w/ 110# yellowfin caught on a 30/02 EXW and at gaff in under 30 mins

I've got 2 single speed fifties and a 2 speed 70, that I used for bluefin when I was fishing around cape cod growing up. I think if you're targeting larger fish like bluefins consistently you are going to need a 50 size reel capacity ( I've got around 300 yards of 80lb Dacron and about 210-230 80lb momoi topshots on boh the 50s and the 70)

That being said, if you're worried about weight, go for the Penn GLD's!!
They cost less but you can achieve th same line capacity.
