I am curious to see how guys have their boats rigged.

I have a Minn Kota RT80. This is a 24V motor but the dealer installed it with only a single 12V batt. I had them install a perko so I can isolate the batts yet allow the trolling batt to be recharged by the main engines alternator as needed.

When I select battery one on the perko, everything works, trolling motor included. When I select batt 2 (trolling motor batt) everything works.
Shouldn't the trolling motor battery be isolated from teh rest of the system when batt 2 is selected? I would think you want to protect the main engine batt (which isn't a deep cycle) from being drianed during trolling motor use.

Maybe it's me, but the whole reason for the install of the perko, was to isolate the 2 systems, then when required, you can link both batts together and charge them from the engines alternator.

Am I wrong here?

jrd,

Yes and no, I know that was no help.

Ok second question first, your alternator can not handle charging two batteries at once, its not big enough.

Also it would be hard to comment on your set up with out seeing it inperson or some real good pics. Lots a ways to wire it up. From what you tell us the switch is not wired right to isolate out the starting battery. To have the starting battery isolated out you would need a third battery to get your 24 volts for the trolling motor.

I don't have a troilling motor yet, but I use a two battery system, two separate circuts, one for the starting motor and one for just about everything else. I can't run down the starting battery with this system. I wired it up through this switch; http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|328|51495|299265&id=712301

Starting battery gets charged by the motor ,the second battery is charged at home by a 110volt car charger.
