It had been almost two weeks since I last went fishing*kickrock*. I got to the Holden Beach ramp at 5 this afternoon hoping the wind would lay down as the sun went down. Got stopped by the Coast Guard for an inspection, which cost some fishing time but I'm glad they are out there and really only took less than 10 minutes, got my go card and went in search of some topwater action. Wasn't sure how the fishing would be after all the rain we had the last couple of days, the water inside is brown and still 80+*. A half hour before sunset with an outgoing tide the wind calmed down and the bite turned on for 45 minutes. Trout and reds were busting bait coming out of the grass and were eager to hit my trusty old beat up skitterwalk. I landed one overslot red and lost two more at the boat(quick release ;D). Three nice trout all around 20" made it into the boat and came home for supper.

Looking forward to the next few weeks of fishing. Going to try it around Swansboro next weekend.

Those were some nice trout*yay*. You don't know how lucky you are living down at the coast where you can go fishing for trout, reds, flounder, etc. any time you have the time and feel like it. We were down at Sunset beach last week and watched the wind blow three or four days the early part of the week and then beautiful weather, but unfortunately my 198DLV was at home (this was a family vacation). My heart sank every time we crossed that draw bridge and could see the bait coming out of the grass with the fish breaking on them.

Those of us living in the Piedmont like seeing your pictures and getting the fishing reports. Keeps our hopes up! Keep up the good reports.*thumbsup*

Allllllllllrightythen.... nice to see you out again Gregg! Broke's coming down on Friday (I think) and if he does, we're going to hit the MHC area... hoping the rain holds off. Looking forward to fishing with you on Saturday too! I think this weekend, with the consistent, week long dry weather and cooling nights, will be our first taste of solid fall fishing... the big feed should start up soon, maybe after our first frost (burrrrrr!)

Great catch Gregg!!!!!!

Hope you don't mind me adding to your thread....

These aren't nearly as big as yours. Enough for a good dinner though. Had a blue about the same size also but he went back.

Had two other STRONG pulls. Drag was screaming. Fish came towards the boat then out again and it was off. I don't understand what was happening today but that happened 3 times. I don't think it was the hooks, I looked at the lure and your can see the marks on the sides. Who knows.

Either way, the fishing is heating up here off of the Neuse as well.

Just a guess Ed, but maybe bigGER trout... with their soft mouths, they often will come loose from their own pull on a heavy set drag, especially if not hooked well in the jaw. If you are away from structure, try a lighter drag setting and let the fish play out until you can get them to boat side, keeping their head under water until you can get a net under the fish.
