Am I the only one who is distracted by the date/time format of posts? It appears to be some pseudo military time thing going on. Why would a PM timestamp be shown as 08:00 PM for example? Can you change that globally Harry? Or can you at least remove the leading zero?

thanks

Sure I can help you with that.

Click on the Profile tab
Once in your profile, on the left side you'll see 3 boxes. In the Modifiy profile box click Look & layout preferences

When that window opens look for time offset and click (auto detect)

This should detect your location and automatically set your time for you.
Once finished scroll to the bottom of the page and hit Change profile

If your having problems let me know your location and I can set it for you.

I don't think you understand my question. I'm talking about the leading zero on the time. Why would 8pm be listed as 08:00 PM?

When you look in any forum at the posts, each one has a time listed when it was posted. When I'm done with this post it will show something like 09:18 AM for example. Why the leading zero? It should simply be "9:18 AM". Not "09:18 AM".

Yup your right, I miss understood your question.

Not sure why the zero is there, but I bet when it hits 10 o'clock it's gone...... ;D

From a programmer's perspective; If the timestamps are stored as a string and without preceding zeros then when ordered (sorted) alphabetically the times would be listed like;

1:1:1 PM
1:11:27 PM
1:2:33 PM
11:24:17 PM
2:23:47 PM

And so on... basically out of chronological order and the threads would be a jumbled mess (postings not in order).

The preceding zero insures order.

Not knowing exactly how the forum software was written and how the database fields were formatted, then this is only an educated guess as to why this was done. It may just be as simple as "it looks pretty".

Shakespears,

Man we have got to talk ???--programmer's perepective?? 004 004 004--come on, a box of crayons and a bottle of rum, thats all we need to solve most trivial dilemmas. 010 1stSgtUSMCRet has got all the larger issues solved. 011

I do wish I had your computer savvy though. 013

Welcome to my world o2b. Believe me... there are days that I wished that I had never seen a computer. This is why I like boating and fishing. Although, I'm kinda attached to my GPS/Chartplotter... not ready to totally give up on technology and go back to a sextant. Not yet, anyway.

shakespears,

Now I could get into learning to use a sextant, 010 thats something I can understand. 010 Maybe I'm to old and set in my ways. 006

As you may have noticed I'm bored today and talking to a 3 year grandson all day has me ready to climb the walls. Love him to death but I can only ansure the same question so many times, and he is always asking. To make things worst I'm stuck home for the next two days at least. 004 004 004

Shakespeare,
I am also a programmer, which is why it bothers me so much I guess. I would expect the timestamp to be stored in the database as the epoch date. But I don't know this software.

ok fellas, me and brevoortia are going to have a nerd convention here. o2b... just go get another rum and a box of crayons and ignore us for a while. ;D

brevoortia, I know this forum is based on MySQL but I have no experience with that particular DB. It's big with the Linux folks though as it is open source and free. You would think that it had a data type for dates and times. Anything I said above is based on nothing more than speculation. If I were the designer I sure wouldn't be sorting and querying based on strings as that is a horribly inefficient method. I do know that each forum has an id, each topic has an id and each post has an id. I'd sure be going after those numeric id's to sort the posts. With that being said I betcha they're just formatting the times, as I said earlier, to make them look pretty and perhaps predictable as far as spacing is concerned in the HTML.

Cool so now I have some computer advisors to help me out ;D

Seriously,
When it comes to computers, I'm just a fisherman with a keyboard. I have a couple buddies that can help me "get by"

The reason I set up this site was becuase I loved the new skiff I bought and there was only one other Bulletin board on the web I could find.MSN.
It was unlike any other web forum I was used to and I thought if it was that hard for me to post pictures there it might be for others as well. I could not edit my post, copy and paste or anything I was used too. I wanted to keep it simple.

It's fairly simple setting up a board like this (FOR THE MOST PART) adding headers, templates, galleries ,etc, is when it gets hard for me. I'm afraid of moving and trying different stuff, because I would hate for the system to crash or losing our datadbase that we have gathered in such a short time.
That's when I put the call into Don or Tom. I HATE calling them as they have lives too and other irons in the fire so to speak.

This simple machines based forum is a free down load (hosting & the domain still cost me) . I'm not sure that I like this format and am considering switching over to a VB ( VBulletin ) type board. Those boards are a lot more user and Admin friendly, plus Tom & I already have one in use @ www.chevythunder.net Check it out and see the style of board, I'll bet you've been on a VB powered board before.

The VB board requires a Licesning fee & annual renewal which I wasn't willing to fork over until I saw how this site would progress (which it has , and nicely I might add, thanks to you all).
Just to give you an idea, the Chevy site has been on-line for about 2 1/2 to 3 years and has around 275 members.
This site has been up for 7 months and has 400 members !!!!

The thing about doing the switch, is like I said, I could not do this myself, because of the fear of losing all our posts and data.
But I really do love the VB style board, functions, and easy of use. Plus I'm used to it, since we have had it at Chevy thunder for almost 3 years.

Good to know you guys are into the computer thing, and hopefully if I ever get stuck, you could lend a helping hand.

Thanks again for everyone's help on making this site what it has become, and I hope you continue to use and enjoy it.
