My 6th grade son gets a math problem problem from his teach taken from the internet. I'm lost, anyone else ???? 001

Yummy Gummies

Mikey was looking through his drawer, where he was saving all of his packages of gummy fruit candy. He found a dozen packages of candy altogether. He kept a chart listing how many pieces of candy there were in each package and figured out that he had 81 pieces of candy in all.

His chart listed the color of each package, but not the names of the candy. Each kind of candy comes in only one color. The chart looked like this:

Green packages 2 pieces per package
Yellow packages 5 pieces per package
Brown packages 9 pieces per package
Gray packages 12 pieces per package

Each Zing Zong is so big that these packages contain the fewest candies. There are an equal number of Zing Zong packages as Gummy Ape packages. There are 2 dozen pieces of Egg Smasher candy per package, and a dozen more pieces of Power Busters than Egg Smashers per package.

Which kind of candy is in each color package, and how many packages of each kind does Mikey have?

The part that gets me is it clearly says
"There are 2 dozen pieces of Egg Smasher candy per package, and a dozen more pieces of Power Busters than Egg Smashers per package." Yet in the chart no package contains more then 12 piece's ?? 006

Here's the web site where the problem is published;

Look for problem #3.

Evidently there was a typo in your copy vs what is on the web site. Here's what the web site said;

There are 2 dozen pieces of Egg Smasher candies, and a dozen more pieces of Power Busters than Egg Smashers.
To me this implies "total" pieces, not pieces per package.

With that being said, here is the solution to the problem. If you want to figure it out for yourself then;

STOP RIGHT HERE AND DON'T READ ANY FURTHER

Green = Zing Zong 2/pkg x 3 pkgs = 6 pieces
Yellow = Gummy Ape 5/pkg x 3 pkgs = 15 pieces
Brown = Power Busters 9/pkg x 4 pkgs = 36 pieces
Gray = Egg Smasher 12/pkg x 2 pkgs = 24 pieces

3 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 12 pkgs
6 + 15 + 36 + 24 = 81 pieces

Well??? Ya gonna post the results or make me keep banging my head against the wall??? 004 LOL

I don't get it Harry. It seems ambiguous to state the quantities per package in the chart then for them to turn around and state the 2 dozen / 3 dozen quantities "per package". So what did you guys come up with? Is the assumption that Mikey may have been consuming some of his candy?

Sorry,

No you already posted the answer, didn't know you were waiting on me.

The "per package" statement is flawed, but I was racking my brain since it was part of the question.
Good job.
