I've been looking at boats all year, and have narrowed my search exclusively to Carolina Skiff. It appears they make an extremely well manufactured boat at a reasonable price. This will be my first boat, and for that reason(inexperience), as well as my tow vehicle, I'm looking at the 17 foot models.

Some questions for the experienced folks here if you don't mind. I won't ask 'which is better dlx or dlv', that's a dead horse.

What year did the DLV model come out? It seems there are very few used DLVs available. Is the Semi-V the precursor to the DLV or is it a different hull shape entirely?

Where do you stow an oar/paddle? It doesn't look like there is an area along the side for this on these boats. Is carrying an oar required in NY?

What books would you recommend for a first time boat owner, specifically for repair/maintenance, but also general topics.

What is the typical weight of the 17 foot DLX on a trailer? My vehicle can tow a maximum of 2500 lbs. I won't be towing long distance, only within 15 miles to various ramps. Will I most likely be able to use this vehicle for that boat if the trailer has brakes?

Thanks in advance,
brevoortia

Welcome to the sight. I have a 2002 17' modified V hull and the dlv is a different shape. Do some back reading on the dlv forum and you should find some good pictures of the shape of the hull. Mine has a slight v in front, but is mainly flat on the bottom. The rest of the questions I'll [pass on for now, hey have a great one and you have settled on a great boat.............Willie

Brevoortia,

Welcome to the site. What part of N.Y. are you from and where do you fish, from up there myself (some time ago).

I believed the DLV first come out in the sumer-fall of 05, I first saw one at the feb. 06 boat show. Not many used ones out there. Harry has a 07 19' DLV for sale, looks to be set up nice and we know its been well cared for. He wants to move up to a larger DLV. That should tell you how much we love our CS skiffs.

The Semi-vee, the DLX and the DLV are different boats all to gather. The semi-vees are flat with a vee bow, the DLV's have a vee shape bow but the hull is like the old Boston Whaler hull, gunnels are taller too, the DLX's are a flat bottom hull with a flat bow and a "channel" or "lip" in the bow area to keep down the spray. The DLX and DLV are for the most part dry rides, not so dry for the semi-vees. They all are built the same way.

You could glue an oar mount to the inside gunnel of your hull with 3m5200. I don't know if you need a oar in NY, I never had one onboard.

Your dealer should give you the owners manual for your motor. I would read all the old posts here and you will get more infro that you will ever need when it comes to repair and set up off your skiff, and if you can't find what your looking for just ask (post), someone will help you, good people here.

GET brakes for your trailer, you'll need them.

Hi Brevoortia... welcome to the CSO site.

What books would you recommend for a first time boat owner, specifically for repair/maintenance, but also general topics.

Here's a web site that is pretty informative and a good place to start. I think you can buy books from the author of the web site articles;

http://www.boatus.com/howto/howto_lib.htm

If you're going to go beyond fundamental motor maintenenace, changing of oil, etc. you can purchase a motor service manual.

What is the typical weight of the 17 foot DLX on a trailer?

Well... the boat (DLX1780) is 800 lbs. The trailer weight will be determined by who manufactures it and what it is constructed out of; aluminum or galvanized. That's probably a question best directed to whichever dealer you're looking at buying from. Someone else may be able to "ballpark" a number at you based on what they have.

Happy hunting.
