Any advice appreciated. We have a beach vac planned next month without the skiff. My 8 year old is chomping at the bit to bring his fishing pole and hit the surf. Do I need to get a fishing license for that? Anyone have any suggestions on where to go in Kitty Hark? Thanks in advance.*014*

Mike,
It's been a while for me but there are a few piers that you should try, kids love piers!
Avalon is in KDH and the others are not far. Might just be little spot and croaker, but at least you are fishing!
Bill W. and CFishn might have some OBX shore type fishing advice.

I used to go to Kitty Hawk with my dad during the summers. We always took his bass boat in the brackish water on the back side and caught nice LM bass.

You can find out all the license rules as well as purchase online and print here: http://www.ncfisheries.net/license/index.html
Check the report at tw's, they usually have good descriptions of where fish are caught

Go to Coquina Beach towards Oregon Inlet. Its about 6 miles on left(look for the windmill) after the last stoplight (or 2miles north of oregon inlet whichever way you are going). Its a public beach access with bathhouses. The beach and water is WAAAAAY nicer that the nags head/kitty hawk beaches and usually more fishier!!. Worth the little extra driving.
If you want do an inshore charter one day check out this guy- good rates, plus he's super nice, Ive talked to him a few times in the neighborhood... http://www.rockoncharters.com/Rock_on_charters.php
OR
The green shack (fishing unlimited) runs an inshore charter from a 21DLV (guy last year was named Mike- good guy also- went out with him and had a blast) AND they also have USS RENT ME's for rent if you are the pontoon type as well! (we also did that the same week as our boat was out of commission)
hope this helps, enjoy

If you fish off the pier, you wont need to purchase a license.
I have always had decent luck bottom fishing off the catwalk on the oregon inlet bridge. Just go across the bridge and there is a parking lot on the east side of hwy 12. Fish off the catwalk with bottom rigs using shrimp, squid, whatever and you will catch the typical bottom feeders.
You can also try fishing off the catwalk on the small bridge between whalebone junction and pirates cove. Same type of fishing can be expected here. This bridge is much lower so you could cast artifical lures if thats what youre into.
I like fishing in either of these places because 1. You can catch all types of fish. 2. Its FREE. ;D

Avalon pier is at mp 5.5

The above tips are spot on!
If you want to go surf fishing you have to have a license. You can get a 10 day out of state for $10.
What dates are you going down? If you do pull your boat we can give you some tips on where to inshore fish.
Have fun.
