Anybody mount horizontal holders on the sides of the hull? How do they work? The lack of interior gunnels make it seem like it cant be done without leaning up against rods on the sides of the hull.

That seems kinda hard to do don't you think???

Plus I have an issue with drilling holes in the sides of the boat for anything.

I thought about gluing a piece of starbord with 5200 to the side and
screwing rod holders to it.
Just a thought, never took it any further . . . ???

Some would say I have a love affair with milk crates, but they are handy on a boat. I use them for anchor storage on both anchors, as well as keeping our aqua shoes in a third one. I keep a fourth one in front of the console that holds 8 rods and doesn't budge (specially after putting 15 lbs of offshore fishing weights in the center).

This will allow you to put the bimini top up and not have rods being in the way. You can also fight a fish around them since they are in the center of the boat.

Construction was simple, short sections of PVC tube bolted in with stainless hardware. I have a small bucket cut down and drain holes added to hold the weights in the center. We've been using this setup for over a year now and it has not fallen over or moved yet, even in windy, rough conditions. Along with the 6 holders on the deluxe console, we can carry 14 rods (sometimes thats still not enough).

I have come across this on another site. Its for fly rods and is made from 2 starboard pads and pvc tube:

The man who made the above says that the rod is not in the way because it is low enough that when you lean against the side of the boat that your knees hit above the tube, and that the tube protects the rod anyway.
For a flyrod, which is typically 9 feet, expensive and flimsy/whippy this setup looks as good it gets for a skiff.

The starboard pads are through bolted in the pics above. I dont want holes through my hull. I have read that if you make dovetails on the back of starboard and then "glue"it to the inside of the hull with 5200 or marinetex that the dovetail with the adhesive forms a mechanical bond to the hull that holds up. The 5200/marinetex hardens in the dovetail as if it were the other part of the joint, and it adheres to the fiberglass.

If this works, it would be great for vertical rodholders, horizontal gaff storage and all kinds of other things. I'll be working on something similar to this this winter. I have started flyfishing this year, but am mostly a meat hunter with conventional gear. ;D So if I can make the above using 5200 and make the fly rod tube removeable that would be ideal.

Nice looking set-up but I have a question. Do you keep poles in place while fishing off the bow casting deck? The reason I ask is I am trying to decide on mounting locations for rod holders on my JVX20. We thought about that very spot but when I held two 7 footers up in place and my friend tried to simulate casting off the front deck, running the trolling motor, etc they were an interference issue.

Is there any "good" spot? LOL! We have tried several locations and everytime we are 95% sure it'll work, something else pops up and we decide to re-think again!!!

This is about the only place that I could mount any rod holders.I have a t-top so beside the console was not an option for me.I have six on the t-top so when I fish from the front deck I just move them.I usually just put the rods in those rod holders while towing .I plan on mounting some flush ones next spring on the back deck.

thanks
