Outstanding initiative Fillet1 and Shakespeare – 013
Size and model boat – 2008 DLV 218 (Factory Standard*)
Motor size and manufacturer – 2007 Suzuki 140 HP 4 stroke
1 Man aboard = 220 lbs.
Prop size and pitch – 13x21 SS (Apollo XHS)
Saltwater tested
WOT RPM’s - 6000
WOT speed – 42 MPH (GPS)
Cruise RPM and speed – 3900 RPM @ 25 MPH
* Factory Standard = Boat pre-rigged (boat/motor only) with no additional accessories that would add additional weight/wind drag.
I really think we need more information to make prop comparisons of any real value. I hope most would agree that no information is better than misleading information. Notice, I’ve included the year (manufacturer may make slight, but significant, hull modification from year to year), and the boat set-up at time of testing. Another category I think important is the Estimated Weight of Onboard People, Gear, and Fuel Tank Level, at time of testing. Folks that have t-tops should state that. Fresh water and salt water testing will show different performance results. To be of any real value, (for comparison purposes) folks should strive to make these performance tests when there is no significant head or tail winds present. In salt water, testing should be done on flat water, with no tidal current present.
Thanks again. I hope every member takes the time to test and provide accurate information. This board provides us “CS owners” a unique and valuable opportunity to learn and grow from each other, but no more than the member’s willingness to share what they know. I’m proud (and thankful) to be a member.

I FIGURE FUEL MILEAGE WILL VARY WITH CONDITIONS (TIDE, WIND, WATER , HOW YOUR BOAT IS EQUIPT ETC.) ITS TAKEN ALMOST 1 YEAR TO PUT TOGETHER ALL THE INFO I HAVE BUT IT WAS FUN DOING IT. WHEN I FIRST POSTED FIGURES WAS IN THE BREAKIN PERIOD WITH LESS EQUIPMENT ONBOARD. THESE FIGURES ARE WITH ALL THE SAME EQUIPMENT AND PEOPLE ONBOARD. I TRYIED TO MAKE EVERYTHING AS CLOSE TO THE SAME AS POSIBLE.
ALL THESE TEST WHERE RUN IN FRESHWATER AND FULL FUEL LOAD WITH 2 PERSONS (425LBS) PLUS 4 BATTERIES, TROLL MOTOR, COFFIN ICE CHEST. REFILLED FUEL AT SAME STATION WITH SAME PUMP AND FILLED TANK TO SAME PLACE AFTER EACH TEST RUN. WEATHER WAS CLEAR AND APROX 5 MPH WIND. WATER SMOOTH.
SHOULD PICK UP A FEW MPH IN SALTWATER AND OR WITHOUT TROLL AND 2 BATTERIES(WHEN GOING OFFSHORE) AND MAYBE GET A LITTLE BETTER MPG TOO 011
SUZUKI 4 STROKES ARE DESIGNED TO SWING LARGE DIAMETER PROPS WITH MORE PITCH SO DON'T LET THE DEALER JUST GIVE YOU ANY OLD PROP. THOSE BIG PROPS ARE MORE EFFICIENT. WITH GAS PRICES WHAT THEY ARE I'M JUST TRYING TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS BOAT AT THE LEAST COST. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO PICKY BEFORE BUT NOW I FEAL I HAVE TO.

Motor - New 2009 Yamaha F40LA 4 stroke 40HP EFI tiller handle w/whale tail
Prop - Yamaha aluminum 10 3/8x13, 3 blade
RPM - Recommended 5000-6000; actual thru dealer pre-delivery inspection: 5950
WOT - GPS with 2 people fully rigged as per regulations - 32MPH
WOT - GPS with one person fully rigged as per reguations - 34MPH
Seconds to plane - 3
Best Cruising Speed - 18-20MPH
Cavitation plate even with bottom
Moved the rear bench forward 15 inches to accommodate longer tiller handle.
Tendancy to porpoise with one but cured immediately with a touch of down trim.
Whale tail recommended by dealer to provide rear lift due to tiller configuration. I'm glad I did it.
Rigging and set up is perfect for my needs. Had my first chance last weekend to see what it could do. Couldn't ask for more. Love the boat.

anybody got performance numbers for a 17vseries, dlx, or similar hull with a 40hp 2stroke. boat has a 11-5/8 x 11 3 blade aluminum yamaha prop. just trying to figure what kind of general performance & fuel economy numbers I can expect.....
wondering if I would be better off swapping from this current 40 upto a 50 would make much difference or would I be better off moving upto a 60. hull is rated upto 75, dont think it needs that much though.*006*

Would love to try a 14 X 20 being I have trottle left at 6000 rpm.
I had a 18.5 Pro Craft bass boat once the would run 60 mph and have had a few close calls with it and have shook up the old kidney stones on some wake's that I did not see coming, so I am happy running 43 and not taking the beating a bass boat gives.

Prop - 11-5/8 x 11p aluminum 3 blade
Load - 7 gals gas, me & fishing gear
GPS numbers, dont have a reliable tach as the teleflex it has sais 2500 wot so I cant give rpm numbers but to go easy on gas I get on plane & run at around 21 to go easy on the gas.
28.4 = wide open
20 = slowest to stay on plane
using a stingray hydrofoil to get out of the hole & onto plane faster for shallow water. Dropping the engine lower with the jackplate 2 inches got me better numbers as I messed with it & the right trim combination a bunch.

RPM's might be off on the high side but it seems correct.
How do you know when you hit the rev limiter?
On this I used the service manual to get the rev limiter rating and that is where the tach went to during testing. May have not reached the actual rev limit but it was well over where it should have been.

new numbers after carb cleaning, reset timing, new spark plugs, & rebalanced prop which had some dings in the blades. Top end increase in rpms big surprise *006* current prop = 11-3/8 x 11p 3 blade.
old numbers

new numbers

Went from an F50 to a T60 after a blown engine. I am loving the high thrust on my skiff.
The f50 would run 30 with just me perfectly trimmed at WOT (5800) a stock yamaha 12 pitch prop. It was slow to plane and didn't have good mid range speed. Wish I would have taken full numbers like I have with the T60.
Here are my T60 numbers with a Michigan Match Aluminum 15 pitch prop in a semi-cleaver shaped blade
3500 - 18 mph
4000 - 24 mph
4500 - 27 mph
5000 - 31 mph
5500 - 32.5 mph
5700 - 33.2 mph
boat planes much faster and acceleration feels more crisp. I think it has a lot to do with the gear case which is much closer to a suzuki gear ratio at 2.33 to 1 (I think suzuki is 2.26 to 1) vs 1.85 to 1 in a F60.

Evinrude four stroke 9.9 HP Model E-10 FRED Serial 04108506
Prop 9.2" X 7" high thrust part #763456
RPM N/A
Fast idle speed 3-1/2 MPH by GPS
WOT 8-1/2 MPH
Typical load is six adults, two large dogs, and 400-600 pounds of gear.
Typical fuel mileage is 16.5 MPG with 95% fast idle speed & 5% WOT
This boat is tiller steered; no center console, and more room/less weight in boat.
Boat will not plane, nor is it intended to do so. Gasoline use has been so minor that we switched to a three gallon tank, because gasoline was getting too old in the six gallon tank.
This model of Evinrude is made by Suzuki, and is based on their 15 HP powerhead. Bought new in 1998 and used two years on a Carolina Skiff J-16, and used on this 24 foot CS since 2000. The only problems experienced have been fuel related, since the introduction of E-10 gasoline.
Electric trolling motor is a saltwater rated Motorguide 67 pound thrust, 24 volt model, mounted on the stern. We've never felt it lacked enough power for the rivers and the seaside of the Virginia Eastern Shore, where we boat.
After selling the J-16, we originally intended to use this until we saved the money to buy an outboard in the 100 HP range. After evaluating our typical useage, and the fact we often used electric power only, because of tight, snag infested waters we frequent, that we did not need a bigger outboard.
If we had to repower, I'd buy a 9.9 HP Yamaha high thrust; not because of any problems experienced with the Evinrude/Suzuki, but because the Yamaha comes factory equipped with a high thrust prop, and lower gear ratio in the lower unit. No need to hunt around for an optional high thrust propeller, like we had to do with the Evinrude/Suzuki outboard.
A 9.9 HP "kicker" is plenty of power as a trolling outboard, or emergency power in case your main engine stops running.

I placed a wanted/for sale add but it got me thinking, several of us have tried different prop combinations. That might mean some of us have extra props. Why not start a prop swap? It might be useful.
I have a yamaha performance stainless steel to swap/sell that is in new condition in a 13 1/4 x 14p . It is a 15 spline prop. Too much bite in the blade and cup, might be better for someone else.

I am trying to understand your numbers since they say a four blade should reduce your RPMs. I know you went down in pitch 3". if you used the same prop type for the switch you should have increased 600 RPM. you went from a 3 blade to a 4 blade and down 3" so your RPM should have only gone up 400 to 500 RPM but you went up 800 RPM. Is the Solas 4 blade an easy to turn prop? I have a michigan match 15 pitch that has a semi-cleaver blade (easier to turn). Have been thinking about going to a 4 blade. been looking at the solas. anyone have any ideas on the results here?

Minner, I could eek out 5100 (maybe 5200) with the 3 blade Yamaha 11X15 when it was trimmed Scary high, but I didn't think that was a reasonable observation. Trimmed up, but not way up - I showed 5000rpms. I switched props because of ventilation in most conditions - so no matter what, the old 3 blade was just not getting it done.
I am satisfied with the Solas Amita 4 blade because it took away the ventilation, gave me higher RPMS (I was overpropped), sticks my bow much better (I don't think I'll need tabs), and makes idle/low rpm manuevering very responsive. It really is like a different boat.
I went through a lengthy decision process, but only had to try one prop thanks to the advice recieved here on CSowners.com that can be seen here:

This is just a guess but I think Solas has decreased the diameter of their 4 blade props so they will have similar rpms as an equivalent pitch 3 blade prop.

Prop is standard aluminum 10x13. With me and my son (220 lbs and 35 lbs) boat hops up on a plane and top speed is just over 31 mph. With mysef, my dad (190) and my son top speed is 27 mph and it takes a little playing around to get up on a plane but when it hops up it is easy cruising. The boat would not plane off with me and my two sisters. Total extra weight with my sisters compared to me, dad and son is approx. 50 lbs. so I would say max load to get on a plane is 440 lbs. I am super pleased with the performance with the 25. 6 gal. will last me all day. I do have a dole-fin but I really didn't see much of a difference after I installed it. The j12 is a great little boat for fishing in the Indian River and it fishes 3 people just fine. If it gets choppy I just slow down. When it's flat she really scoots along.
I have not hooked up a tach but engine sounds like it's turning about 5K.

http://www.carolinaskiffowner.com/showthread.php?16840-Motor-height-question-thoughts.../page2
Specs:
CS 1765 DLX with Honda 75 4-stroke
Motor height is next to last hole from the top. That is, one notch lower than as high as you can go. When the boat and cavitation plate are both level, the cavitation plate is ~ 1/4" above the hull.
The stock prop was a Solas Titan 3 blade 15P. This prop was not bad, but motor had to be trimmed in all the way to keep from porpoising. And, it would hit 6k way too easily, IMO, with a top speed of about 34mph, IIRC.
I contacted Ken at propgods who, after getting all of the details, originally recommended a PowerTech 4 blade 17P (SCD4 - 17P). There were none of these in stock, so I had him order a PowerTech RXB4 (4 blade, 17P, has more rake and cup). This was too much for my rig, and rpms dropped to 5300-5400 and speed went down to 32-33mph.
The next prop I tried while waiting for the SCD4-17, was a SCD4-15P. This was an improvement over the RXB4, I was able to trim the motor up a little more, but it still hit max rmps too easily. I also tried this prop with the motor raised all the way up, and performance suffered and porpoising was worse.
When the SCD4-17P finally arrived, it turned out to be PERFECT, just as Ken had originally suggested! Handling is great, and I can trim the motor up higher without porpoising than I have ever been able to in the past. It turns like its on rails compared to before, and my speed has increased from about 34mph to 38-39 mph with max rps at 5900. BTW, this was in a choppy bay/river and a very windy day. If I trim it up high enough, I can still get it to porpoise, but that is due to the nature of the hull design, and absolutely no weight in the bow with just me onboard.
Sorry to be so long-winded, but I thought I may be able to save someone else some time and trouble by explaining the whole experience.
Thank you Ken for all of your help, and generous time on the phone!

F150 TXR
Power Tech 15 X 15 4blade SS
5800 RPM, trimmed out goes to 6000-6100RPM
GPS is 46MHP trimmed, with 2 on board..
Originally came with Solas 14 x 21 4blade SS ....ewwwww 4500 MAX!!!
switched to a Solas 14 1/4 x 17 4blade SS its better, but still only 5100 MAX!!
*009*
I filled out the prop sheet from Power Tech, and sent to them. they promptly sent back response...Call so, I did...Talked to guy there (Marcus Clements) that took LOTs of info, and he made a recomendation, of a 15 X 15, 4blade SS (said he would guarantee it to be right, or would swap until it WAS right!!)
First checked tach with a known tach (he thought tach might be off, considering boat speed was about where it should be 45MPH) Both tachs showed same thing...Changed prop, it woke up a sleeping giant! Boat almost leaps out of the water, bet its on plane within about 15-20ft!!. Engine turns to 5700-5800, then trim to 6000-6100...Speed still about 46 MPH by GPS...Now cruise about 3800 to 4000, and running about 37-38 MPH by GPS...Extremely happy now!!!! Would reccomend Power Tech to anyone!!!! *thumbsup*

WOW Jim thats scoottin. Same motor as mine but your boats 2 feet longer and your getting 2-4 more mph than me. Of course my prop is worn pretty bad and now my tach is acting wierd. Sounds like you hit your sweet spot. *Cheers*

Suzuki 150
Suzuki SS 3X15.25X19
WOT 6000 RPM 41.3 MPH/GPS
5000 RPM 32 MPH
3500 RPM 22 MPH
Cavitation plate is even with hull bottom
Day of testing:
Boat has T-top, no trim tabs, oem rigging.
2 people, rear bait well full
9 MHP head wind, seas 2-3 light chop
Thoughts:
No question motor can turn a bigger prop. 0-30 is instant with this motor/prop combo.

The guys at Power Tech make props, and they seem to know quite a bit..He was exactly right about mine! He did tell me that if I had a 198 or even a 218 that my old Solas prop (14 1/4 X 17, 4 blade SS ) should be about perfect..If you decide you want to change, let me know, and maybe we can get together, and see how it works for you..I have a prop with about 20 min. on it just sitting on work bench, lets put it to work.. ;D
By the way, those were some niceeeeee pics of Sat on the water! I have a very sick family member, so I was regulated to stay home. Anyway, looked like you were havin a great day!!!

I would love to try it but I think a 4 blade would slow me down. Maybe the SS will make up the difference? Ever get up this way? Maybe we could try something new and meet up halfway one day.

Capt. Jim,
I have a 2007 19dlv with a 2007 90hp 4stk suzuki. Just bought it and the prop is alum and is in poor condition. Looks like that prop you have sitting around would work on my rig, how much would you be willing to let it go for?
A little info - had the boat out this weekend and it woulf run around 34 mph with two big guys on board at around 5200 RPM. Trying to increase speed.
Thanks

I have a 198 DLV with 115 Yamaha. I am seeing 35 with a 19 pitch prop trimmed down and 40 trimmed up. Switching to a 17 to see if I get better performance. Both props are Yamaha factory standard.

Just got around after two years to getting the new motor on the boat. So heres what I got.
The size and model boat you have;
2008 198DLV Elite
The motor size and manufacturer (and 2 or 4 stroke);
2012 Etec 115 xl shaft, 2 stroke
The prop size and pitch;
Evinrude Alum 14.5x19
WOT rpms
5400rpms
WOT speed
36mph GPS
Cruise rpm and speed
3500 RPMs 24mph GPS
Load
me and my wife 300lbs
full tank of gas 32 gallons
Trolling motor
3 marine batteries
T-top
and safety equipment
Just a little FYI and to make sure we compare apples to apples. The Etec 115 are 4 cylinder motors but once you move up to the xl shaft the lower unit moves up to the 6 cylinder gear cases and uses the larger V6 props.
The conditions were fresh water with a 1' chop and a stead breeze. Less then idea for testing (IMHO).
More testing to follow and I'll update it once I have more info.

You should try a 15 pitch. With a 150 on that boat you should see at least 40.

The conditions were fresh water rather smooth with no chop and little to no wind.
Also worth mentioning. I have tried this boat and motor combo with both ss and aluminum props. While the ss gave a mph or 2 more in speed the handling and feel is much smother with the aluminum prop. I thought I would need to upgrade to hydraulic steering as it felt real stiff in tigh turns but that seems to have disappeared with the change to an aluminum prop.

2012 218 DLV
140 Suzuki
4 inch set back jack plate
Insta-trim tabs
Light load (2 people plus fishing gear)
No tops
Suzuki OEM 14x20 SS:
I love this prop. Boat jumps up on plane in a boat length.
39.9MPH on the GPS is max speed at 6200rpm. I could trim more but am out of RPM's (Cruise 25-30 at 4000rpm)
Suzuki OEM 14x22 SS:
I loose a little hole shot but the bat runs 43.4 at 5800rpm and it cruises 25-30 at a lower RPM than with the 20 (around 3500)
Observations: The 22 is well within spec and it the "right prop" for the boat the way I run it (Light weight). I had 5 people in it the other day and the water was rough. I was wishing I had the 20 as it was slow to plane.
I like the 20 for all around performance. I just cruise at 25-30 anyway. 39 is fast enough for me.

I have a about the same as above, but without the jack plate and no trim tabs.
The motor is set in the center (3rd) mounting hole.
The prop is a Solas 13 7/8 x 21 SS
Top speed with GPS was 44 @ 5950. Cruise around 25 MPH @ 3600. Motor only had 20+ hrs, so I really didn't stretch it too long.
