Great boat but I recommend you take that 50 Yami off and sell it separately. You state right in the ad that the boat is overpowered per CS and Coast Guard. If the wrong person buys that boat and has an accident you're leaving yourself wide open for a lawsuit. Would hate to see that happen.

Actually it is not over rated by the coast guard formula but is over-rated by Carolina skiff's "under-rating" system.

http://www.uscgboating.org/SAFETY/boatbuilder/downloads/PART1.pdf

Based on the formula in the Coast Guard's Boatbuilder Handbook (about 110 pages) it is good for a 65 hp (remote).

In short.......

Step one:
Find the "factor".
The "factor" is defined as (Boat Length x Transom Width).
For argument sake lets say the J16 hull is 15.5ft x 5ft.
The factor is 77.5

Step 2: If the "factor" is greater than 52.5 you then use this formula:

For Remote Steering the formula is:
(2 x FACTOR)-90=Max Horspower ("raise to the nearest multiple of 5 if applicable")

So for my J16 with remote steering........
(2 x 77.5)-90 = 65 Max Horse power. ;D

Now...... if it was a tiller motor it gets complicated. Bottom line is that with the "deductions" for flat bottom hard chine boats it rates at only a 25 HP with a tiller.

The Handbook does say, "The performance test method may be used to determine maximum horse power". Key word being "may". Based on this method the boat has to perform things such as a 180 degree U-turn at defined speeds and etc. I am sure Carolina Skiff did this and rounded down to come up with the 40 HP rating. I am sure they want to cover their asses so to speak; however, if it is good enough for the Coast Guard it is good enough for me. It seams like just enough HP to me. If you put 3 grown men, gear, drinks, live bait, ice, etc, it could still use a bit more power.

It may be a deterent for some people looking to buy the boat but to those people who don't feel comfortable with this hull being married to a 50 HP ....don't buy it. I decide to be honest about it so there were no surprises once it sold. I will find the right buyer.

al_e-gator,
Don't think I am directing this at you. I appreciate your opinion and advise. Just throwing out some info for the world to see.

Hey, as long as you're confidant you have your ducks in a row and are covered, more power to you. I just thought I would bring it up because I've seen it mentioned before in other forums. Lawsuits are ugly things and I hate to see honest well-meaning (or unknowing) people taken to the cleaners by jerks over preventable risks. good luck selling the boat.

Thanks for the concern. Maybe I will have the buyer sign a disclaimer.
