FLOUNDER SIZE LIMIT DECREASES

MOREHEAD CITY – The size limit for recreationally caught flounder will decrease to 15 inches in many coastal waters of the state beginning April 1.

The new size limit applies to flounder caught in the ocean and eastern sounds, from the Virginia state line to Browns Inlet near the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base in Jacksonville.

Specific lines are detailed in the proclamation at http://www.ncfisheries.net/procs/procs2k9/FF-33-2009.html. The lines separating the different recreational size limits for flounder are the same ones used last year and are shown on a map at http://www.ncdmf.net/procs/procs2k9/FF-33-2009-MAP.pdf.

The current size limit for flounder caught in these areas is 15.5 inches.

The size limit decrease is allowable because recreational catches of summer flounder in 2008 were approximately 42 percent below the state’s allocation of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s coast-wide recreational quota. North Carolina had been allocated 115,000 fish for recreational catches in 2008. Fishermen caught 67,000 fish.

The creel limit will remain at 8-fish-per-day-per-person in all North Carolina coastal waters. The flounder size limit will remain at 14 inches in the western rivers and sounds, and south of Browns Inlet.

The 15-inch size limit does not apply to commercial flounder catches. Commercial summer flounder harvest is managed under a separate ASMFC coast-wide commercial quota.

All ya need is ya commercial license. Don't believe they ever got over 13, maybe 14.
IMHO, 15's are still too small. If they ain't big enough to get FOUR (4) good filets off, there too small.

The people that had them got to keep them, I don't think they Issue any more commercial licenses here in NC do they? I see them advertized all the time around here for 2500 to 3000 dollars a pop. You can get what they call a recreation gear license. Allows you to use 100 yrds' of gill net, any more than that and you got a hefty fine, and you are held to the same standards as any fisherman as far as size and limit. You better not let the man catch you with a illegal flounder or trout. There is another license you can purchase to harvest more that a 100 clams, but I've never checked in on it. Usually 1 of the boys is with me and you can take 200 per boat. That's all I 've ever needed at a time.

Oh YEAH!!!!!! I can't remember how many 15 and almost 1/2" flounder I caught last year. My wife cringes every time we throw back a fat 15" flounder. She wants to practice filet and release! ;D

More of this during the summer!

I can't begin to tell you how many boxes of 13-14" flounder I turned down this past year. All of em from "pound" nets.:mad:

And for the most part, I say the same thing. On the other hand in my fall Sept/Oct trips, first thing I'm looking for is 50-100 pound of fresh mullet. How the hell am I gonna get that if ALL the nets are gone? For a hook and line man it's a catch 22. Damn if I know. *004*

For us in NY, summer flounder (fluke) is 20 1/2" and 4 per day per person, that's IF they open it this year *004**004**004**004*
