So i was bored, and thinking one day what if i had to buy a new motor tomorrow, what would i go with. Eliminating the fact of getting an older 2-stroke which i would love i decided to keep it to just 4-strokes, and an E-tec.

Suzuki 40hp 243lbs Suzuki 50hp 243lbs

Yammyhammy 40hp 214lbs Yammyhammy 50hp 237 lbs

Etec 40hp 232-250lbs depending on model......

Talk about a shocker to me and really a wide range of weight, alot to think about for us older/smaller skiffers.

Kinda makes me like the newer yammys even more, but really just personal preference. I loved the older johnsons and evinrudes, and i think the etec is a good thing, just dont think it has all the kinks worked out yet, for every one i hear that runs great i hear of run that doesnt. After working around boats for 2yrs the 90% majority of boats are running yammys, Zero of the working boats around here use suzuki's except for about 5 crabbers....out of alot more. And not many people have etecs for work use. And mercurys.......ha i dont think i have seen one in quite a while, except the verados i always see in the mechanics shop. Have no basis, just chatting and sharing observations and some research! Maybe it will help someone...maybe not, oh well!

Good info Matt. I have some more to add. When powering a small boat, sometimes weight is as much of a factor as horsepower. I know you limited your choices to 4 strokes, but I went through the same checklist when repowering my j16. I settled on the Yamaha 50 hp 2 stroke, which weighs in at 189lbs. Minimum weight-maximum power.

***The j16 hull is only rated for 40hp. I don't mean to start a debate about the intelligence (or lack thereof) displayed by overpowering a boat. I am aware of and accept responsibility for the potential liability I have exposed myself too by my choice of motors.

HONDA ANY ONE ? OH AND MY 115 HP WEIGHT IN AT A WHOPPING 505 POUNDS

I WOULD COMPARE IT MORE TO A 135 HP TONS OF TORQUE AND HUGE DISPLACEMENT 2.3 LITERS OR 137 CUBIC INCHES FROM THE ACCORD BLOCK WOW !

HERE IS THE TEST INFO ON A SKIFF CHASER

I'm not a speed freak and find that my uses for my JV 17, fresh water lakes, rivers, and shallow water red and speckled trout, I find don't require speed. I launch not too far from where I need to to, I enjoy just crusing and observing as well as catching fish. My Yammy 40 HP, 4 Stroke is reliable, matches my skiff well and I am pleased with it. Others like to go quicker from point A to Point B. Great but a flat bottom skiff was never built for speed. I think the Yammy was a good choice for me, (especially with a stainless steel prop), so that is my recommendation.

haha, reminds me of my brother's first boat, a 20' Proline center console that was rated for a 140hp, the previous owner had put a 200hp on it! talk about over powered! i dont think we ever ran that thing above 3/4 throttle*laughing*

Yammy used to make a 40hp 2 stroke--they don't anymore. If they did, that is definitely the one I would have chosen. 2 stroke Yammys now go from 25hp right on to 50hp. *001*

BTW, does anyone know what year they quit production on the 40hp 2 stroke Yammy?
