Hello,

Any one running a radar on a smaller sized skiff? I've been toying with the idea for my 18ft skiff. Spring time the fog can get real thick until about mid July, and a few of my spots I need to cross shipping lanes and well, I alway get that feeling that theres a tanker bering down on me:eek:
Just wounder smaller sized units you may be using or know off and something that wont break the bank either. *thumbsup*

I had a JRC 1000 on a small boat before. Very nice unit for the money.

Thanks for the lead NEM. I just made a brief search of the JRC 1000 and it appears like a reasonably priced radar system. I've considered radar on my skiff for running at night but the price of admission (of the few systems I've looked at) was always prohibitive.

Here's a thread on the JRC posted on the Whaler board.

Dave, that money i spend on that unit was (in very few cases for me) money well spent. Other that it was not a color unit, was as good as the Raytheon i had at the same time on my other boat, so i did have something to compare them.

Fellows, I believe that the JRC1000 was discontinued some time ago. The local BoatUS store used to carry them and in fact I bought one to put on my 1966 Chris Craft Commander.

I dont see any listing in the West Marine catalog at this time either.

The JRC will defently fit my needs, I have only found online for about $1K.. Hopefully one will show up on e-bay sooner then later.. Thanks for the suggestions!*thumbsup*

I think the newer models are JRC 1000 MKII. Here's one listed, but I didn't check to see if it was available.

Dave, you are correct. The MKII is the new version. I think they changed the screen, use to have a little more glare than normal, and they made it a little faster, same as the 1500 version they had.

If you want to keep the cost down, check out some of the small boat radars available on eBay. Stick with Furuno or Raymarine LCD types. I found a Raymarine RL70 with dome for about $600, and I can't believe how well it sees even small targets (like no wake buoys) in the harbor. Some of the RL70's also have a built in chartplotter too.
