Sometimes it is just best to stay in no matter how bad you want to go.

Like the saying goes....A man has to know his limitations(and the limitations of his equipment). Too bad it had to lead to that though.

there is a really good reason that the weathermen put out "small craft advisories" and it is usually a good idea to listen to them! very sad story, but it could have easily been avoided. it is surpising in florida that this doesn't happen more often with the large number of boaters we have. i've been out on a day we shouldn't have. storm force winds blew in quickly off carabell, fl. we were in my brother's 20' center console proline in swells 7'-10' with a solid 2-3' chop on top. it was the worse seas i've been in on a small boat and i remember kissing the dirt when i stepped back on dry land! we were lucky b/c that proline had an open transom so we would've been in the same situation if our motor had died.

Unfortunally, we have the same problems here, a lot of peope go out on those little boats and while trying to pass through the "Gut", a place known for it 10 MPH current and chop reaching 6-8 foot, they usually capsize. Thank god, that area is so busy, so a few were saved by other boaters(i did it once), but we do claim at least one deadly accident a year. This is really bad, but people sometimes don't use their brain and costs theirs and others lives. May rest in peace.

Very sad, and in this case easily avoided. I have to say though, sometimes you need to be observative too. One memorial day here in the 90's, I remember driving to the beach on a Saturday. It was a PERFECT day. When I got to Havelock, it started to get just a little overcast. My dad was fishing his boat, my uncle in his own. Dad is boardering on paranoid about clouds on the horizon and suggested they come in. After an hour of begging, my uncle agreed. As they pulled the last boat in, the bottom fell out. He said you could see it come across the sound, with gusts in the 40-50 range. Three boats sank in the Cape Lookout Bight, including a boat with a man, wife, and their 18 month old child!! No one died, but the coasties were very busy. Moral here: PAY ATTENTION TO THE CONDITIONS!!!

Here is my pet peeve: Idiots that do idiotic things and then call to be rescued. While it's the Coast Guard's job to do search and rescue, people need to not be stupid. (I know, you can't fix stupid.) Things do happen (sudden thunderstorms, mechanical failure, problems with a boat hull, etc.) but most rescues are caused by people doing things they shouldn't have done (We've all known 'em: "I ain't skeered!"). Folks, the ocean will kill you. Like Slim says, small craft means small craft (e.g., any Carolina Skiff or any other "open" fishing boat). Why people risk their lives and then expect others (read, the Coast Guard) to risk theirs to save them when things go bad I cannot understand.

I would add that my feelings about this apply no non-boating stupid as well. It frustrates me to hear stories of people skiing in avalanche-prone back country (or mountain climbing, or any other "thrill" sport), for instance, when some public servant (sheriff, state police, etc.) is going to have to risk life or limb to save them if they get theirselves in a mess.

All this said, I do feel for the families of those who perished. What a tragedy.
