hey guys,
been reading the site along time. i have an old boat but newer, 2005 40 etec that was used. it is a great motor but dont know what i need to do for it. i have read you dont need to service it for 3 years and it winterizes itself. i have never messed with the motor other than adding a little oil here and there. it is 3 years old what do i need to have done??? im not real familiar with the outboard motors, alwasy been a trolling motor fisher in the lakes. so all the help i can get would be great, cuz this motor is better than anyone could ask for and i want it to last a long time. thanks to all for the help.

oh i have an old 16 DLX, early 90's im guessing.

Welcome to the site. Where are you located? At the very least you need the water pump, lower unit oil and plugs replaced. All pivot points should be greased. Remove the prop and check for fishing line around the shaft against the seal. This is a good start. The E-tec will winterize itself but you still have to tell it to do it. Have you tried this yet? I haven't been able to get mine to winterize and it always ends up getting done at the dealer using his computer.

Here is a link to the BRP website where you can download a copy of the operators manual for your motor. It contains detailed instructions for "fogging" your motor for winter storage. It is easily something you could do yourself.

Welcome.

I bought my boat and etec used as well. Fortunately, I knew the boat dealer that serviced the motor. I was able to confirm the maintenance schedule as with the etec they can give you a print out from the computer.

If you don't know the service schedule, I would recommend taking the motor to an etec dealer to give it a once over. At least find out the previous owners name, and where he took the engine for service.

Al E is a great resource for etec's. :secret:

He referred me to this website for etec questions:

Good resources on that board as well. *thumbsup*

Good luck and enjoy your new boat!
