I'm not a winter fisherman but I was invited to go Blackfishing on a private charter. I needed to get out of the house and I had never been blackfishing before so I took the offer.
We left out of Shark River Inlet in Jersey early and dark in the morning this past Saturday. A clear day but just after a blow from the midwest.
Cold it was and a steady north wind at 20 knots.
It took a bit getting used to the way those togs bite. I also got credit for my generosity in feeding them green crabs for free.
I guess the worse part was when I hooked up with (and this is according to the mates and the Capt.) one big ole tog. Needless to say it made it half way up and I reeled in a sinker and no hook. I took alot of heat from my buddies and the crew for that miss. All day!
When it was over, me the rookie ended up being high hook with 6 fish.
Imagine that!
The trip was great and I'll do it again.
Better yet I had never eaten blackfish and on Sunday two nice fillets were devoured by my wife and I. Good eating fish!
