Okie dokie, I just got a am/fm receiver for my birthday. I already have a vhf radio mounted on my rig, and I have a small 4' stainless whip antenna mounted to my grab rail. What is this business about a splitter to run both radios on one antenna? Is it just like a cable tv splitter? I assume that I would only be able to use one radio at a time. That does not seem like a big deal, unless I am overlooking something. I really don't want to mount another antenna on that grab rail, unless I just have to. There won't be much grab room left. *006*I thirst for knowledge. Thanks guys....and gals.

Yes, the splitter will allow you to use both radios at the same time.

You can go with the splitter (kinda pricey), or go with a flex-wire antenna (inexpensive) like I have. It's simply a piece of 16 gauge wire with an antenna connector on the end of it. I'll take some pictures this evening.

By the way, I've been 20 miles offshore and still picked-up radio stations! *thumbsup*

Joe,

Here's a pretty good thread talking about splitters. It might help you in your decision making.

my dad has the splitter on his offshore boat and it works great! we have an 8' fibgerglass antenna and we can pick up tons of radio stations, so i'm sure you 4' whip will pick up all your local stations. and yes you can use them both at the same time, no interference! i dont have a radio on my sea ark, only a vhf. the only sounds i want to hear on the water is the sound of a redfish inhailing my topwater!*006*

I don't know how much a splitter will cost, but here is another option that works well on my boat....'bout $15 @ Boaters World

I have the same antenna as Chumhead, had the splitter, paid 50 bucks for it and it's laying in the floor of Hudson canyon.
