On saturday I fished out of my parent's boat offshore to try and find some cobia. Decent conditions most of the day, with only a slight swell. VERY HOT! My goodness it must have been 110 offshore with zero wind. Fished my favorate "tripod" marker and got one short cobia, maybe 26". Didnt even get a picture we released him so fast to cast on another one. Spooked him instead of inticing him to bite. We tried a grouper spot further offshore with nothing to keep for the fishbox. Caught 4 grouper that were all probably within an inch of the 22" size limit. One of them had to weigh over 5 pounds. It was the biggest sublegal grouper I've ever seen. Tried to scallop sunday but the visibility was less than a foot. Plus the jellie fish were all over the place. I'm dying to get the skiff back out, but without a top it's murder right now.

I think I might bring my boat up next week and stay at the Best Western on Crystal River. I have beeen out the mouth of the river once. I might try the fishing and the scalloping. Slim To none give me some input here.

Tom- it's not hard to find the scallop grounds, just run out past #1 marker and head to the south. the only thing you have to worry about is an area of foul rocks called "gomez rocks". at low tide these are motor eaters! the easiest way to go is head SW from #1 marker towards the "platform", it's a high school research platform. you'll see like 15 posts sticking up on the horizon about 5 miles offshore. head towards it, once you get about half way out to it THEN you can head more due south. this way if you dont have a GPS with gomez rocks marked you will be sure to avoid them. you'll see the "mass of idiots" as we call them. go to the south of the big group of boats and look for 3-5' of water and jump in! last weekend there was less than a foot of vis, so hopefully this weekend will be better! as for fishing, right now i would head north of marker #1 to the spoil banks. try some live pinfish or shrimp and you should find some redfish. the grass flats around that platform are also good for trout. i will be out saturday on my skiff. i'm heading out at 6am (b/c no top & heat= murder) but i keep my vhf on channel 68. just call Slim to None if you have anymore ??s.
