I've heard people mention using trim tabs on their boats and i was wondering if anyone has used the engine mounted hydrofoils on a carolina skiff and if so, what kind of effect did it have. Any response would be appeciated.

I don't actually have a hydrofoil on my boat but I saw a guy at the ramp with a sundance skiff with one on and I asked him about it. He said it helped him get on plane quicker. Believe that if you will but that is what he told me. His skiff was around 17' and he had a mercury 50 - 70 hp motor on it.

I don't belive you would need them if you have the right prop.

i put one on my old 97 dlx16 w/40hp yam. and it improved the holeshot, stayed on plane at 400 rpms lower than without. i thought it was a great add on.

I put a Doel-Fin on a J16 with a 25 HP Yamaha 4-stroke. Prior to installing the fin I could not trim the motor up for optimum boat speed without porpoising. I don't have hard numbers, but after the fin install I got up on plane faster, could stay on plane at lower engine speed, and no porpoising. I could pretty much set trim for max boat speed and then just forget about it regardless of engine RPM. I had experienced the same behavior on other boats (outboard and IO). Highly recommended.
I wondered if it would work with my setup as I have a CMC tilt trim which raises the motor about 5" above where it would be if mounted on the transom, but it also moves the motor back. I was not disappointed.

I have one on my 198dlx - with Johnson 90 hp 4 stroke - it does get up on plane a little faster and I believe it helps eliminate porpoising - I have had mine on so long now I can't really remember how it did without it now - I guess it has improved I did'nt take it off 006
