I recently bought a V1980 that came with a Minn Kota Riptide 12V 55lb thrust trolling motor. Has anyone had experience with this TM? Is if sufficient to push my boat?

Hello cpa4fun,
Is it a single battery or are 2 in parelell? Some of the "V" guys need to respond here, as I am a dlx guy I don't know if it'll push the v around, or for how long ( that's why the battery question)

I have one battery but am not oppose to 2 in parallel if it will improve performance. I just don't want to spend time and money setting up 12V TM and find out it doesn't work.

Hello cpa4fun,
In MY opinion, a 24 volt 80AP riptide would give ya a LOT more everything. Question is, how much ya gonna use it? I don't think it (the 55) is "all that" when put on a 1980 dlx, let alone a v. Question 2, where ya fishin at,lake, river, flats, inlets? How much current ya gotta fight wherever you are fishing at? I can't answer for the dlv, but the 80 will spin a 2180dlx like its a top.
Hope this helps a bit,

Running two batteries in parallel will keep the voltage at 12v and basically double the time the motor will run. But if you run two batteries in series you'll get 24v. If you double the voltage you cut the amps in half. This being said, both scenarios would have you buying an additional battery. But, the first scenario you already have to trolling motor, just a new battery to buy. Scenario two, you would be buying a new battery and new trolling motor.

i have a 24 v on my198v.. it moves the boat quite easily. nolw depending on your setup i may recommend the 60 in nshaft if you get the copilot with remote. i am not the lightest guy so when i go into the rear of the boat the nose lifts and causes the trolling motor to cavitate. i also recommend the battery tie dows that are the screw in type. had the others and ripped them out after three trips. the best investment i made though was the power pole in the rear. thats a whole other story. i would say definately the 24 v with 27 type batteries. never ran dead yet and i used it for several hours straight

I used a 36 pound thrust freshwater Minn Kota on a CS 24 for about a year, and it was plenty powerful for freshwater lake fishing. We upgraded to a Motorguide saltwater motor.........67 pound thrust, and 24 volts. In wind or current, it does just fine.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I think I will try a season with the 12V and then either upgrade or buy a bigger boat (my preference). Thanks again
