I am guessing you use them surf fishing right? Is the retrrieve 1 to 1 like a fly reel? It must take an hour to reel your line in if you cast that far!

Hey Fillit1,
The Alvey is used anywhere, from downriggers to fresh water, these reels suck up line so fast ya gotta slow the retrieve down, the 4 inch reels suck up @12" per 1 revolution, 6" reel does @ 17" per turn.
Check out the site, it takes a special pole (eyelet spacing and size) but if you try one, it'll probbably be the longest cast you ever made. I have used the Alvey at Surfside Beach here in S.C. and had folks from 1/2 mile each way come to see for themselves. (I am surprised word travells the beach that fast)
The real large arbor gives you a lot of power, and you can set the drag or palm it.
Go look at 'em, real outside the box thinkin here!!!
