Now that IS a swamp lizzard! The hide will fetch some "economic stimulus" funds.
I note your picures was taken in daylight. Gator hunters around here typically get theirs at night.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do with 600+ of gator? I can figure out the hide part, but is there anything you can do with the rest?

Nice Gator! I'd call that one a Bull-a-Gator he's so big...*thumbsup*
If your interested there are a ton of gator hunting videos at utube.
I remember when Gators were a species of endangered now there's said to be more than a million of them in FL alone.
One of my friends got one last year and took 6 hours just to skin it and dress the meat.

Capn Luke,
Sorry to say it, but it tastes like chicken. I don't see why SC gators would be any different than FL gators and there are a few things to consider when chasin' gator meat. Rule #1 is this: The bigger the gator the tougher the meat. Most people who get permits to hunt gators down here are looking strictly for size, but those who want to find the best eating meat go for the 4-5 footers.

My curiosity is definately up on this gator meat thing. I have a good friend that is a hunting guide, and if you want to hunt it, he'll figure out how to scare up a trip. I'll have to see if I can't talk him in to arranging something next year. I'm sure that this is something that a couple of idiots like him and myself don't need to be gettin into without experience so I'll have to see if he knows someone who can help. Do you guys have any recommendations for guides on this? Or can you even get a guided hunt for gators? Never been much for having a guide, but I think I'll accept the help on this one!

NCBowfish,
I am totally ignorant on the subject (that list is long), having never hunted a gator, but how do you take them? Side arms or bow like hog hunting? Do you bait for them? Trap? Or find a bed and wait or something?

There are diffrent ways to hunt them. I like to hunt them in the day time. you can judge the size of the gator better, at night all you have is the glowing eyes to size the gator by.I found that watching from a distances the gators habits, you can see how they come and go from the places they like to sunbath or where they like to feed. The large gators are terriatorial and are creatures of habit. Then you can use your troller or big motor to get to them with in bow range (10yrd). If the gator doesn't spook. Once you get an arrow in your gator you better hang on for the fight of you life. Then you need to get another arrow in the gator as soon as you can this is a must. Then you need to try and bring the gator to side of the boat having control of the gator. Putting some type of snare around the head/mouth of the gator then you can dispatch the gator by using your hand gun or bang stick. no baiting or traping. Scouting is the most important part of any hunt. PS. It does taste like Chicken, the smaller gators are better for eating.
