OK now that I am able to run out the inlet on nice days, I feel that I need to upgrade some rods. As of right now all my rods are Penn Captiva or Silverado's mounted on medium or medium light rods. Most of these were purchased as combos, two of the rods are captivas, two more are pursuits. I am afraid that these are not what I need for the fishing I intend to do.

I only intend on fishing the near shore artificial reefs out of Bogue Inlet near Swansboro. My understanding is I could expect to catch Kings, spanish, flounder, AJ, black sea bass, and even an occaisonal dolphin.

I am looking for 2-4 rods/reels that could be "do all". (except the spanish, I am going to use hand lines, planers and clarkspoons) I also do not want to break the bank, but I do not mind spending a little more for quality. I hope to be able to cast, troll, and bottom fish.

Do they have a book on this stuff?

Sounds like you would do well with avet SX's on medium-heavy fast action rods. They are about 160 a reel but well worth it IMO. I have a pair on ST Croix rods that let me fish the back for fluke in 5 feet of water but can still handle 8 ounces of lead fishing in 85 feet of water in our artificial reefs here. They are lever drag so they would also make nice light trolling reels. There is alot of stuff out there from penn, abu garcia, and shimano that will also work.

i'm kinda brand loyal to penn and pflueger. an all around trolling set up that will double as a good bottom reel (for me anyways) is a penn 320gti. i have mine loaded with 17lbs diameter/ 65lbs test power pro and it works great! got one at sports authority for $160 with a penn jigmaster 7' medium action rod.
