Hello all,
I am looking at getting a doe colored JV17. The dealer is telling me to go with a 2 stroke 50hp Yamaha. i love yamaha so the brand is not the issue. i am wondering if I should put a 4 stroke 50hp Yamaha on instead. with the boat being so light would the F50 be too heavy? How much is the F50? I just remember having 2 strokes years ago and hated them. They are loud smokey and always had problems getting them to start up. I have been spoiled by the 4 stroke. Super quiet and no smoke. I don't think fuel economy will be that much difference between the two.
I may put a poling platform on the back as well so I don't know if that plays into anything.

First off Welcome to CSO !!!

I remember a guy a while back having that boat (JV) not sure on the length ?

He had real weight issue's. What HP does the plate say the boat is rated for ?

Take a good look at the manufactures web site on the brand engine you choose and check the weights. Also since the boat plate does not specify engine weight, just HP, be sure to ask the dealer how the 4 stroke vs the 2 stroke will effect the HP rating.

Sounds like your dealer already recommended the 2, so call or e-mail other dealers and it wouldn't hurt to contact Carolina Skiff as well.

Tell them CSO sent you. They are pretty good about answering your questions.

Again,
Welcome aboard *thumbsup*
Harry

I have the JV17 with a Yamaha 4 Stroke 50. It is the Center Console Model. The Plate indicates 5 People max, and 50 HP. I haven't had any problems with the 4 stroke yet but it is still almost new. I have a SS Prop and a Hydrofoil which helps. I am not sure what top end is, as I'm not a speed freek but it gets great fuel economy and has plenty of power for me. About 35-40 MPH top speed.

I'm sorry,
I just did a search on that guys post and it was a JVX not the JV that he had.

Sorry about that.
Howver that HP vs Weight issue could still be a question if your concerned or plan on max'ing out your HP rating.

Do you feel that you have weight dispacement issues or the stern sitting lower?
What is hydrofoil?

Nevermind about the hydrofoil.

No....I am super happy with the combo of the Yammi 4 Stroke and JV17. Stern sits just fine. Just put on the hydrofoil for accelerated planeing action and better handling. I do believe the Stainless Steel Prop helps though.

With the power tilt & trim....It works out great.

how about the stability of the boat? Is it tippy?

No, it is very stable. I bought it for creeks, lakes, rivers, and the shallows in bay. It has a better ride than the J17, is narrower than the JVX (63"), but you can walk around, back and forth, without the tipping action. Like I said....I paid 12,600.00 for the boat, motor and trailer, out the door. I am super pleased, just trying to get all the little things right now that is needed. It is perfect for the fresh water fishing I plan on doing and also a little fishing for reds, and speckled trout in the Panama City Beach, Florida area.

I see you have a 40hp on it. How much performance do you get out of the boat? Speed, out of the hole? Why didn't you go for the 50?

Like I said....I get plenty of power. I also could have put an E-Tec on it but the Yamaha 50 was 600.00 more and the E-tec 50 was 900.00 more than that. I set a limit, don't need speed, etc. Also, after he included the SS Prop, and I installed the hydrofoil to get on plane and save gas, I am extremely happy with motor I have as compared to the boat. I'm still can get up to 40MPH if needed but I only go about 25 most of the time. I just am not in a hurry like I used to be. I am retired, don't fish tournaments, etc. Have no dying need for speed.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

Foodplot, you said you have th 50 HP but your signature says 40HP. If you have the 40, maye there is a weight difference bet. 40 and 50 ?

Typo. Sorry. I have the 40HP Yamaha. The engine runs quite nicely to my satisfaction and I could have purchased the Yamaha 50HP or the E-Tec 50 HP for the additional monies I cited. Don't need the speed in my type of fishing.
