I'm considering adding some of these to my 218 DLV and would like to hear from someone that has installed and used them. I don't want to cut holes in the boat right now so that's why I am considering the rail mounts. They are fairly priced and the video on the website protrays them as very useful.

I don't have them but a buddy of mine does. They are great but are fairly small. The hole will not accept a very large diameter rod handle. Great for freshwater and innshore sized rods.

L,
Here are some you may consider. I have fished eight for two and a half years now and could not be happier! Versatility is unprecedented!
Looking at their site, I do not see what they are made of...............but they are not a "hard" plastic and the sun doesn't appear to have had any effect on them so far.

I had Quick Draws on my boat previous to my 2180 DLX. Overall Quick Draw is a good holder, but I live bait Stripers in a tree riddled lake. They take a pure beating when hung up in a tree with 20# mono on downlines. I put 1/2" Santee's on my Skiff and won't use anything else now. I didn't try the rail mounts, all mine were base mounts. Hope this helps you in some way. It's all in how you are going to fish.

I've used Attwood Pro Series, very similar to the ones you mention, for 8 years on two different boats with no problems. They are pretty stout and can be mounted flush, on rails or side mounted. I know for a fact they'll hold 30+ pound blue cats, 30 inch red fish and bottom if you drift fish any. The flush mount bases aren't as strong as the rail or side bases.

Ive been reading all these posts about rod holders and have noticed that no one has the driftmaster aluminum ones... any reason why? Just curious i have base plates mounted that the threaded aluminum holders spin into and out whenever i dont need them, i feel better with metal than plastic, but also know that composites have come a long ways and i have no experience with them. any ways just putting ideas out there!

Hey Matt,
I have four rail-mounted Driftmasters on aluminum bases in the back of my boat. There is not one thing wrong with them *thumbsup*..........I use them on a regular basis. However, they can not touch the RamMounts for convenience! Main thing is; with the Driftmaster type, you only have one direction of movemant, usually horizontal 360 degrees. So you have to purchase more if you want to fish with rod tip up versus down and change them out.
Also, you mentioned the strength of plastics...........I can attest as I do LOTS of drift fishing for catfish, when a rod gets hung in one of these, it will stop the boat, literally. Oh yeah, they bend and flex some but I have never damaged one. Occasionally I will forget I have them out loading the boat on the trailer and twist everyone as I hit the uprights on the trailer......never give it a seconds thought. Seriously these are some tough, tough rod holders!
As long as these are available............I will always have them on my boat. *thumbsup*

Thanks for the info - it is great. What my concern now is the inside diameter of the rod holders. As a result of one of the post I researched the Cabels's quick draw holder holder and it is 1 3/8" ID and some of my rods are 1 3/8" OD so that won't work. Right off hand does anyone know of a holder that is adequate to accept my rods?

L,
I'll measure mine tonite for you.......1-3/8" no problem. These things are almost 2" wide down at the bottom. I use "Berkley Big Game" rods for Flatheads and those have pretty big handles. *thumbsup*

Well guys I did some more research and think now I may have found just the answer. This holder is just like the Cabela's but will hold a larger diameter rod. This is the site and I am looking at the Charter series which will hold a rod 1 3/4" - https://rapidreleaseco.com/index.html

I use a similar product made by Roberts/Atwood. They work fine but the rotating silde that locks the rod in the holder can be cumbersome when you're in a hurry. I used the standard bases and mounted them with a stainless steel u-bolt and elastic stop nuts. After 5 years use, I noticed base cracking on one but they are readily available.

Got these rod holders today and they look great. Waiting on the rail mounts so I can install them.
Jim, I coming in here late and know you've already got your rod holders but I wanted to say a word in defense of Cabela's rod holders. I've been using their Quick Draws and 360 HT's for a year now. Love 'em! I have installed (4) flush mounts and own (2) each of the above holders. The 350 HT's are for my offshore trolling rods - their butt's won't fit in the Quick Draws. Mounted in the bases properly, (read: fully inserted) they are plenty strong. Line strength doesn't make a difference, it's the drag setting that effects how much strain is on the holders. I rarely set my drags over 15 lbs, (more often 5 to 10) especially for hard hitting, strong and fast running fish, like tuna, wahoo, and king mackerel, and I troll with the holders pointed 30-45 degrees aft - never 90 degrees from the gunnels. When running deep planers, I must run the drags close to the 25 lb max of my deep sea reels, simply because of the drag from the planners, and these holders have handled the strain just fine. I'll likely be installing two more bases, to provide the flexibility of having two more stations where I can mount the holders when I am drift or bottom fishing.

Dave, thanks for the info. I don't doubt the quality of Cabela's rod holders and really liked them but my issue was I don't want holders that my rods will not slide into. The rapid release holder will accept my smallest to largest rods with no problem. Actually I think that Rapid Release manufacturers the rod holders for Cabela's and private labels them. Looking forward to trying the rapid holers later this month in the Cape Fear.
I gotcha. The 360's were purchased to accommodate my larger butt rods but I do (better) like how the rapid release holders work. Looks like yours has the best of both features. I know you are mounting them on your rails but do you know if they make those with a flush mount base" That was one of the criteria I was looking for (since I don't have rails) when I went with the Cabala's holders.

Yes, they do have flush bases. I mistakenly did not order the rail mounts on my first order and when I expressed my regrets to the customer service lady she must have taken pity on me and sent me two rapid release caps for free. Look at this site - it tells it all. https://rapidreleaseco.com/index.html I'm impressed with the product.
I see it now - helps to read the print ;D Looks like a full system and says the holders also fit any Cabela's (and Scotty) mounting system. I like the flexibility their system provides.

Installed one of the rod holders today (only time for one - will install the second one next week - football tomorrow) and I'm very impressed. Only one more test - fishing. Hopefully they will pass that test with flying colors.
