I recently bought an 06 J16 that previously had a motor mounted on it; the new motor I have uses a different bold line up than the prior engine. Would I just drill new holes or do I need some sort of mounting bracket? Do you just mount the motor to the transom with no protection and then dill new holes for the bolts.
Thanks to all who can help, If clarification is needed please ask.

How close to the existing holes the new ones are going to be?

~1", The new holes will be slightly higher and narrower.

1" is very close, you gonna have to do some glass work or fill the holes and use either big thick washers on the inside of the transom or even better a transom saver bracket for the inside of the transom. That should be enough for lets say 50 or 60 HP motor.

Thank you for the help. This is my first boat (Besides sail) so I feel like I am in the dark.
