well the time has come to replace the water pump in my '84 Mariner. I am assuming all of the lower unit seals are a little worn out, appears to be a tad of water in lower unit oil, it could also be just worn out oil, anywho gonna spend an evening on it tomorrow and hopefully it all goes well! Will hopefully post pics and results!

More than likely just a prop seal. Fishing line will eat one up. Good luck. *thumbsup*

make sure you get a water pump "kit" as it will come with the impeller, the "tubes" for the intake pipe, and the stainless mounting plate. shouldn't take more than an hour or so. and yes the water is most likely from the prop seal, check for wrapped up fishing line!

You can get a pressure pump and guage combo that threads into the lower unit oil drain. Adds pressure to the lower unit then allows you to find the leak with a little soapy water. Maybe you could take the unit to a shop and negotiate a test for a few bucks.
Good luck...

Well after its all said and done the seals were in great shape, we are thinking the oil is just really old. And the old water pump.....wow, when we popped it out it only had half of one of the 5 blades remaining........the bolts were junk, and everything just had alot of crud build up on it.. the person showing me how to do it said he feels strongly it has never been looked at. I got to thinking that was 24yrs ago when it was put in so i think it did its job. But got the pump swapped and it is peeing like a champ now, a huge difference! So im looking to get some gear oil to change this morning and go fishing!

Gear oil change went well, i really feel like the motor ran better with the new water pump.....maybe its just me, but today was the best that boat has ever run! Tried fishing but couldnt hardly stand the 108 degree heat today....so we found an island and relaxed in the water! I have a photo ill upload later!

Oh yeah, and no water in the oil when i got back so im thinking all is well?!?!

Very cool. Glad you caught that pump when you did. Sounds like the lower unit is ok. Check it regularly and you'll feel better about it.
Woah 100+ temps are not for me. I can hardly wait for September. ;D
