Looking to by a 1655 DLX CS with a tiller to save a lot of money. Looks like I will prolly get a 25 hp. I have Suzuki, Yamaha, and Mercury to choose from...all with different prices. I can get a 2 stroke or 4 stroke in the Yammi and Mercury, but can only get 4 strk in the Suzuki.

What should I choose!?

(I will be getting this from Ed's Marine)

I believe that the dealer is more important than the brand. All motors are good anymore but not all dealers are. Check out the reputation of the dealers you are talking to. If the three motors you listed were being sold by the same dealer and they were good Suzuki would be my choice.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

All brands are good, the most important thing is your service dealer. Get the motor you can service close to you. Good luck.

I really think the Evinrude eTec's are worth a look-see.. I think they really have some features that set them apart from the crowd.. A 2 stroke that's quieter than the 4 strokes, no maint for 300 hours, winterize it in your driveway yourself in 5 minutes (no fogging, no nothing..), very clean.. Just look at the comparison charts they have in their advertising..

Either of your choices are good however, that boat is rated for 50hp.
I'm thinking you're going to be real sorry real quick with a 25hp on it. Most all dealers will try and sell you a underpowered boat trying to make you think you're getting a "good" deal knowing full well, ya ain't gonna like it long. *004**004**001*
I'd opt out for a 50 tiller with power trim. That would make a great package you would be happy with for years. Side note, I'm a Yama and Merc man myself and have had tillers on them both. ;D

yeah, i have been thinking the same thing. I am curious as to what the top speed would be for a 16 dlx and a 25hp. My family has an old late 70's fiberglass jon boat, 16', with a 25 hp 2 stroke...it cruises well with 2 or 3 people in it. However, I dont know how much it weighs. I think around 500 or 600, but if the 16 dlx performed like this boat i wold be fine with the 25 hp.

is weight of the boat the biggest contributor of hp needs? or does hull design also play a big role?

My "opinion", weight plays more of a role, it's not just the boat but you also have to consider everything ya might put in it, people, coolers, trolling motor, etc etc. That's the main reason I'd go with the 50. Also IMHO, a 25 would be working itself to death on that boat while a 50 would just be crusing and more than likely at the same speeds, using less fuel. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I am a huge fan of the tiller steered outboard. I am also a huge fan of 4 stroke technology.

I dont want to step on the etec guys toes, but I have done the cost comparisons, they are not as great as you may be led to believe. I run 4 strokes excusivley now, but I do use an etec.

Pick a the one that will give you the most bang for your dollar and can be serviced by a dealer that you have faith in. Then dont look back!

My opinion...

Ok, I hear ya. To be honest though the 50 hp puts me above my price range. Would I do better getting a J16 then with a 25hp...or are the advantages of the DLX worth it to the point where the 25hp sacrafice is justified?

Let me explain my usage of this boat: I will take it out in the ICW's like James River here in Va (a bigger river that connects to the chesapeake bay), the Sounds in NC near OBX, also some lakes, and small creeks. I will also carry anywhere from just me to 4 people. not too much gear...cooler, rods, anchor, etc.

so what do you think?

Aren't there some 30s or 40s out there you could look at? Unless the 25 is already maxing you out price-wise you might be able to find a slightly bigger motor for less than a 50.

yeah there are, but at Ed's Marine there is no 30 hp option and the 40 hp 4 stroke is even more than the 50 hp 2 stroke.

2 stroke 25 hp is $2300, 40 hp is $3900...big difference. I am trying to stay $5k or under.

Not trying to be a smart a$$ but if I was you, I'd wait till I had enough $$$$ to get what I wanted. You ain't gonna be happy with that DLX with a 25hp on it.

haha, ok ok. *clonk* your prolly right.

I just had someone tell me that they did 29 mph (gps), 4 people, with a 25 hp 2 stroke yammi on there 16dlx. If this isnt BS, its exactly what i was hoping for...but who knows if its true. does seem a little faster than i would have thought.

Where were they going - down a waterfall? That sounds a bit on the high side for a DLX with a 25 and 4 people, unless they weighed 20 lbs each *laughing*, and even then I'd question the numbers.

I wouldn't normally suggest a first time buyer consider a used boat/motor, but on your budget, and what you are wanting to do, maybe you could find a good (used) skiff with a larger motor. There seems to be a pretty steady diet of 16-17 foot CS's come up on the market from folks wanting to move up in boat size - many of them fairly late models for 5,000.00 and under, and most throwing in some costly boating essentials and accessories. Just be careful that the motor has been well maintained! If in doubt, before you commit, you can have a dealer run a computer on any of the late model outboards.
