View Full Version : Using the livewell while under way

With the position of the livewell pickup on the back of the transom, the factory pickup is out of the water while the boat is on plane. I found and installed a TH Marine EZ Pump (available at Overtons.com for about $12) which installs over the pump pickup tube without having to drill any holes into the hull.

It scoops up water while under way allowing a constant flow of fresh water to your baits while running to your favorite fishing hole. EZ Pumps are available in 3 sized, but you will need the long version in order to reach the bottom of the hull and provide a steady flow of water to the livewell.
This is how your bait will look when you arrive at your destination....

Hey Chumhead,
I have an intake for my livewell like the one in this picture. Will that shroud you have cover this? Also it looks like it's screwed to the transom. If not how does it attach?
Thanks for all your tips here today...... 8)

Harry,
I think there is a plate that threads onto the existing thru hull and the white plastic scoop screws to the plate. I'm sure Chum will chime in.
BTW - I've seen some guys make temporary intakes by threading pvc pieces on the thru-hull.

Harry,
That screen just unscrews and the EZ pump has a plate and a nut like piece that screws on to hold the plate in place, than the outside plastic cover has 4 small screws that screw into the plate, no new holes in your boat.
I tried one on my dlv but in wasn't long enough to work on plane, used pvc pipe in the end.

The replies are correct, you just take the screen off, remove the thru-hull nut, install the supplied backing plate, re-install the nut and install the scoop housing (screws only screw into the backing plate, not the transom). I did have to trim a little off the thru-hull to shorten the length, and also used a good bit of 3M5200 for added holding power. Also used a much beefier nut on the thru-hull fitting to withstand the pressure. Works great, but as O2bfishn said, it must be long enough to reach the bottom edge of the transom in order to scoop water.
Another hint: I drilled a small hole at the top of the EZ Pump to help evacuate trapped air, as I was having a problem with the trapped air keeping the water from flowing when I first drop the boat in the water.

Good bump,, one question,,, while underway if the pump is not running does water still come into the livewell ?

Yes it can, however there should be a little shut off valve near the return (spray head) in the livewell
And drilling a tiny hole at the top of the shroud is a great tip from chumhead and keeps the shroud from becoming air bound

ok thanks I looked on the overtons site and did not see an ez pump can I assume you are leaving the outside plastic piece there and installing the pump where the th fitting is going into the plastic piece can you shoot me a picture and let me know what other name the pump might be under

Your not replacing the "pump" just installing the shroud and bacng plate, that comes with the shroud.
Installation is about 10 minutes.
1)Remove the intake screen and nut from thru hull fitting.
2)Place backing plate over thru hull plumbing tube. and secure backing plate with 5200 and screws.
3) Attach pick up shrod to backing plate.
4) Catch bait, go fishing, ENJOY !!!! *thumbsup*

all this sounds to complicated to me. But not exempting the fact it's not a good idea:cool:

As stated by "Ynot" most 2010 models bring this modification already in place...*thumbsup*...It is the best $12.99 I ever spend to keep my pogies kicking, and alive during my one hour + runs to fishing numbers...*thumbsup*....specially if I have to pay $15 a dozen for them during some tournaments...

mine was installed by the factory too high so I moved it down a bit it worked fine for awhile them stopped working when I pulled the boat it seems that two of the screws came out, I must have striped them when I put them back in so now I will need to pull the bracket off and put a bolt though to the outside of the cover has anyone else done this?

You want to ensure you put a good amount of 5200 in them holes before you put your screws back...That will not only help with water intrusion but also firm up them screws...

I would go up a screw size and be careful not to over tighten them.

the boys at cs put the pump pickup too far up so at speed the thing was out of the water so I pulled it off and lowered it along with putting 5200 in the screw holes now it works fine
