If you want an hour meter but don't want to spend $45-50.00 for one, go to the Northern Tools website and search for 'hour meter'. They look the same as the marine stores but the the price is vastly different. The rectangular analog model is only $21.99 and the 2" round one is $24.99. Digital models are also available at a higher cost but still less than the analog models at the boating stores.

If you've got an ignition switch, one side to ground, one side to the terminal that gets 12 V when you turn the ignition switch on. Presumably your engine will be running any time the ignition switch is on, so there's your engine hour meter. As I don't have an ignition switch, I'm not exactly where I'd hook one up to my Yamaha. I do have a switch for the tach, which I usually remember to turn off when I kill the engine, so I'd probably connect it to that. They are pretty simple devices that generally have a wide voltage tolerance.

I don't want to throw water on the party, but, a marine hour meter can withstand the environment we use the boats in. (salt water and air) I don't know if non marine designed hour meters with hold up for more than a year or so. Just food for thought, based on experience.

I had that thought too finatic. I have hour meters on my tractors and they're exposed to the elements but it's not quite the same as salt water. I dunno *006*
