Hello,
I found this site looking for info on J16. I am in the market for a used boat and have decided on the CC. Tons of great info on here and I look forward to learning more.

Welcome,
We have many people that own that same boat. Also we have a "J" series forum and Dock Sale.

You looking new or used?

Good luck & you've come to the right place to talk Skiffs !!! *thumbsup*

You said you are looking for a CC. What other items are important/not important. Livewells, cooler space, seating, etc...? The great thing about these little j-series boats (I have one myself) is you can tailor the setup 100 different ways. Once you know what fits your style of fishing, you just have to be patient until you find the one that is just right. Good luck in your search. BTW, welcome to the site.

No need for cooler space or livewell. I flyfish so, I want the large front deck. Up in the air if I want a rear deck. I would like the console to have a front seat so I could carry an additional angler. Will add a poling platform after purchase. Will also install a trolling motor if one doesn't come at purchase. I would prefer a 2 stroke 25hp to keep weight down.

This will be my first boat purchase. Any telltale signs of misuse that I should look out for on the hull or motor?

IMO the most common problem people find with used (new as well sometimes) Carolina Skiffs is a waterlogged hull. This is usually caused by someone improperly sealing a hole where a screw penetrated the hull while installing some accessory. It adds significant weight to the boat, increasing draft and making performance sluggish. It is not, however, and dealbreaker. Many members of this forum have identified and resolved this problem, restoring their skiffs (at least closely) to their original weight. There are many threads on how to fix this problem. Other than that, most other problems will be readily apparent. Check for stress cracks at the transom, or any other gouges in the hull. More than likely you won't find any--These boats are like little floating Sherman tanks.
