View Full Version : Gas - how old is too old?

I filled my 27 Gallon tank with premium gas in Nov 07 - eyeballed the amount of Stabil I put in it (enough to turn it slightly pink) and had it shrinkwrapped. I expected to use the boat again in Mar but things changed. Today I am considering siphoning the gas out of the boat into the truck and refilling the boat with fresh gas before taking it out. Is this paranoia, overkill or a good idea? The motor was winterized prior to storage and does have a fuel water seperator on it. The motor is a '07 115 Yamaha 4 Stroke.

Morning Tawn,

Many here may disagree........however, I use Stabil and leave my gas in all year round. If I don't use my boat, I crank it every month (during winter), but I don't worry about water or condensate.

My mechanic told me at my 20hr. service to use Stabil if the boat was going to stay put up for over a month. I use it all the time.......haven't had a problem in over two years. I do try to put the PROPER amount of Stabil in, though.

I personally wouldn't worry with Stabil in there. Crank her and have fun!!!

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

My boats sit from November to May every year for the last 25 years or so and never had a single glitch, no matter the motor kind or make.If you treat it well in the beggining, you will not have a problem later.

Was told by Honda that the problem is not so much water cond. but that gas octane will lower with time. They suggested not running engine hard or full throttle until you are at least run it down 1/2 and add new gas to the mix. This may be due in part to more stations using alcahol based fuel. Anyway Honda was concerned about preignition (spark knock)
