I think that is a good alternative to the power pole. I would prefer the the stayput brand personally just by looking at online. I did not those were available. I think it would lookk good on the back of your dlv.

there is also a product called the Wang Anchor, i know some people who like it. the key is having something like the wang, or the stayput is having that mount to your boat that the pole slides through. without it the weight of the boat will pull the stake right out of the ground. with the mount instead of pulling against the stake length wise, it pulls horizontal across the pole creating much better holding power. i think it would work great for your boat!

This is a a great alternative to the power pole. I prefer the the stayput brand looking online. I am getting tired of tangled up anchor line and chain. I am eager to purchase one. I hope it will have the correct angle for the back of a DXL. I will call StayPut on Monday.

Thought about this Idea today. The steps are pretty solid. It is through bolted in the transom,So why not build the holder into it.Do you all think it is strong enough and would work like this.

Brokebeach,
I think your idea of using the swim platform will work.
You'll probably do a better job yourself and cheaper than you could buy one.
You need to start marketing and patenting your mods. They are all money making ideas. Thanks for sharing them. *Cheers*

Great idea broke! I'm with Gunnar, if that's what you want............you can do it cheaper and definitely higher quality yourself.
What are you thinking of using for the pole? Any ideas on that yet?

Great idea on the location Broke, as far as the fiberglass pole it might bend on you and not hold very well.Again, i don't know if you fish when heavy current is present.

Wow! Yes that looks great with the swim platform. Would a telescoping pole work similiar to the type they use to clean pools? It could lock in place in the extended position or close for easy storage on the boat. You could modify the top similar to the wang type for leverage. It would beat paying the $ price tag. I also noticed must companies will sell the poles by themselves, which leads me to believe either people are losing the poles or breaking them.
I have the same swim platform, when I removed the bottom screws to take a better look at the platform, old stinky water started pouring out. The dealer used bathroom type caulk to seal the holes the bottom screws to the platform where in. Water is still pouring out. I am glad I took the screws out. Once the water drains out, I will reseal with 5200. Maybe I will pick up a Knot or two with the lighter weight.

I went to a marine store in Tampa that sells the Wangachor, and when I asked the sales person, he informed me that everyone has been buying the smart stick, or something close to that name. It was a black fiberglass pole with a toggle and line attached. Most people just stick the pole in the sand and then tie the line off to a cleat. The fiberglass stick sold for around 75 dollars. FYI.

Hey Guys
I have done a lot of research on these type of anchors from power pole...wang..stick it..cajun..ect...Some pros and cons...The kind that have a tube or bracket to hold them to the boat...Some fiberglass poles have been snapped by jerks waking your boat...Ok so use the wang type with a stainless shaft...the shaft wont break but if the bracket is not properly backed it can rip out...Cajun anchors(stainless rods with welded ring to tie rope to)...they work great but are heavy and can get under boat and tear bottom up...Power pole...works great but costs a fortune...OK the one I probably will try is some sort of stick it...A composite rod(sorta like the power poles stick end)...light weight..stores easy on side of gunnell...holds well...just loop on cleats which lets you use it all around boat even better if you have bow and stearn claets installed...the flexabilty of it actualy helps it stick better than a rigid pole because it bends instead of pulling out...allows for some sidways movement(wakes) which the bracket type does not..I have a friend that uses two stick-its when He fishes the Hybyrd run at Anthony shoals...it lets him hold his boat sidways in the current without any problems...So I think Ill try one of the Stick-it types untill I can afford a Power pole...than keep it to hold the Bow of the boat while the power pole holds the stearn....BoogieBlues

Well, live and learn, I guess. I just finished a few days ago installing the Wang anchor on my j16. Thanks to this thread, I will be careful about using it in an area succeptible to wakes from other boat traffic. A bright spot for me--I plan to do most of my fishing in the 10,000 islands area out of Chokoloskee, and the best fishing is away from the channel well into the maze of mangroves. I fished for several hours without seeing another boat a week ago, although when I returned to the channel to head home there were quite a few boats on the water. I hope to use the Wang anchor where it is appropriate and be able to give a good review a few months from now, mainly because I'm more or less stuck with it now, but only time will tell.

WIP- your J16 should be light enough that if you were to get waked, the boat would most likely float free before the Wang spike would break. i dont think you'll have to worry about this problem. i've seen a 17' mitzi flats boat hold strong while being waked by a rather large cabin cruiser. he had no problems.

I am going to hold off on this project to at least this fall. You all have good points.Like Workinprogress said,You probally have to fish where their is not much boat traffic.I can see some pros and some cons.I will stick with my conventional anchor for now.
I will think about this some more.
Thanks for the input

Hey guys,
I had the bowmount stayput on my 17DLX which I used for clam-farming and loved it.
I also know the guys who build them here in E.central Fl. They also built a custom half-tower for my Maritime 20DF and did a georgeous job.
Anyway, we use pvc poles to mark our plantings and they get barnies on em after awhile. If you anchor the traditional way and the boat swings you're up against those poles scratching off bottom paint and the side of the hull which I hate.
With the stayput all you have to figure is a swing circle and make sure there's no poles in the radius and your good to go. Holds well even in a good current. Not a scratch since. At under $200., alot better than an hydraulic powerpole!!! IMO*thumbsup*

I've been watching this thread for a while now and i have a maybe stupid question, why on earth would somebody want to anchor from the stern especially when current is present ? Isn't dangerous for water to come in the boat from the engine cut out ? *006**006*

Its for you to imagine NEM. I have to imagine what striper fishing is like.
Not stupid at all. Your right about stern anchoring in deep water with heavy current and higher seas.
It's just your not used to fishing in 2 -5 foot of water littered with rock and grass and ringed with islands of spartina and cedar.
Here I spend whole days dropping nothing but the stern anchor, not taking a single wave to the stern, feeling no discomfort.
Most of the time the wind is blowing toward a point I want to fish. The boat sits quiet. I instruct the kids to cast from the bow to the point. We sit patient and "bam"! Fish on!! When its time to go I start the motor, pull the anchor, and back away from the point.
Its all about the terrain and the type of fishing one is doing. I like it because I keep the engine out to the deeper area and keep my eyes forward watching the kids and the fish.

This is what i've been using... Its a probing rod, used for locating underground pipes and such... They are 60" long and have a "T" handle which I tie a short piece of rope to the ties off to a cleat.. The plus side is this model is plastic coated with rubber caps on the ends. It is fiberglass and very light weight.... Now granted, it is only good for use in pretty shallow water, but for the flats fishermen out there its not a bad alternative for 40 bucks....
I also use it to staking out on the beach too... With the "T" handle it is easy to push in the ground....
Just had to put my 2 cents in too...
Oh here is the link to where I got mine http://store.phonetx.com/3085-7500n.html

Try the ones at south chatham tackle. This guy makes some awesome stuff. While there order the pirate plugs also. I catch kings 9 to 1 on these over my traditional rigs,
