Fished Saturday out of Swansboro.
Started out the day with the sun coming up at Bogue inlet and the old coast guard channel looking for some bluefish, no luck. I decided to move and get out of the 20mph north/northwest wind. We[me and my old man] got behind Huggins island in the lee of the wind and dropped the trolling motor in and beat the banks for some puppy drum,no luck. The area looked real fishy, the water was fairly clear and lots of patches of eel grass and oyster bars maybe the fact we saw some twenty odd gill nets is why there weren't any fish. Headed up Queens creek to get some lunch at the house.[for Cbullman if you read this] I was able to get to my folks dock which is about 1/2 mile above the bridge, 3 hours after high tide in the creek. Took about 45 minutes to eat some lunch and headed back out. Had to raise the motor as far as possible and putt-putt out to the middle of the creek to find some water, drop the motor and punch it to jump on plane and we were good to go.
Figured we were gonna have to have bait to catch any fish. Found a little creek off the ICW to throw the cast net in and found a dozen 4" to 8" mullet. There was lots of small bait to small to catch with a throw net but a good sign for the rest of the year. Went up to Browns inlet to soak some bait,no luck. Gave up after an hour called it a day. Checked the weather channel back at the house and saw the barometric pressure was pretty low and put the blame on it for not catching any fish.
The forecast for Sunday was for more wind,SW at 20 to 30 mph. *kickrock* Slept in and woke up to calm and the barometer rising.*004* *004* It looked like about a 2 hour window of decent weather so we hopped in the truck and headed to the ramp. Ran straight to a little creek I know that would give us a little shelter from the wind and usually holds a few puppy drum. Located a few fish *yay* that were willing to hit some topwater plugs. I really get a kick out of catching puppy drum on the surface. I don't even care if I land them seeing the little vortex behind the plug and it disappear and then your line race off in another direction gets my adrenaline going. We managed to land one apiece 23" & 25" in a 1/2 hour and decided to give these fish a break and try another spot. By the time we got back to the ICW the wind had picked up and was bucking the tide so it was time to go in before it got worse.
All in all not a real productive weekend but, just a tease at the end to make me look forward to the next chance I get to go fishing. *014*
