Tow rig, sleeping rig and tackle hauler. Does a good job, about 20 mpg if I keep my foot out of it. I'm planning on buying a new one cause at my advanced age and few miles driven per year it will probably be the last rig I will ever buy. Some of the best sleeping I have ever done is in the back of a van on a foam mattress (however you spell the thing) Is there spelling correction on here?

I've slept a many nights in the back of an old van and you're right, some of the best sleep ever. That said, I've always heard you're not "supposed" so to do any heavy hauling with a front wheel drive car, truck, etc. Might want to check on that before you dump your old one. And yes, I'd like a spell check on here too!!!!

I have the 5.4 on this truck - on my last truck it was the extended cab 4wd it did not get as good milage as the 5.4 but I drove it 350,000 miles - hard to argue with that performance but still tuff on gas

Here's one for you guys. We just bought (along with my J16) a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier with a 5-speed manual trans with the assets from finally selling my trike. Not that I would consider towing with it, but in the manual it says under no conditions should you tow with a manual transmission. I've always felt more comfortable towing with a manual than an automatic - felt I had more control, engine braking, etc. Any idea why Chevrolet takes this position?

I have a Sonoma, basically S10 with a manual transmission, and my manual says nothing about not towing. It says stay under 3K pounds i think but thats it. Shoot maybe that explains why my tranny broke apart last year!(yeah it really did) seriously though maybe they meant just on the cars??? My uncle also had an s10 with a manual that he pulled a boat with for 20 yrs, 375,000 miles later it finally threw a rod....so i dunnno?

My point was directed at front wheel drive cars and trucks. 012

I have a 2003 chevy venture van, front wheel dr, autmativ and have towed my 17' boat and also a pop up camper with it for many miles and have not had any problems with it. except now I need some air shocks on the rear cause it is starting to sag under any weight. Willie 017

bob- it's just the front wheel drive vehicles that chevy doesn't recommend for towing. as for no towing with a manual trans, as long as its rwd the trans will be 100 times stronger than most autos. i think chevy figures most people that are driving small fwd cars dont know how to tow anyways. 014

It's not just the chevys as far as cars go but I admit, I'm not up to speed on the vans. I've been outta the van business for a while now. Smaller cars, fwd, towing large has always been a no no. Maybe a jet ski or very small boat but I'd think that's about it without being set up for some major problems. 006
