View Full Version : Tell me how your transducer reads

I have heard that many skiff owners have trouble with their transducers reading bottom at any speed other than idle. On my Dlv, the bottom is not shoebox flat as with the DLX, but I have not experienced any problems whatsover with reading the bottom at speed. At near 30 knots, it still reads. I have a Garmin 298 with the dual freq transducer. If I make a sharp turn in chop it loses bottom momentarily, but it gets it back as soon as the boat is level again.
I notice that some of the people having problems have a very small transducer, like those made by Humminbird or Lowrance. I feel that the larger transducer isnt affected as much by hull turbulence as a smaller one.
How does yours work and what model are you using?

I owned two bay boats prior to my 198DLV. Both of the bay boats lost bottom at about 20 MPH. I have kept bottom at 40MPH in the DLV. I have a Humminbird 947C which is a much better unit than my last two boats. I think part of the difference is also that the transducer on this unit states it is high speed.
I think that it also comes down to location of the transducer and angle of mount. If it is too close to teh center line it is going to get lost in the cavitaion from the propr at higher RPM's. Also if it is angled incorrectly front lower than the rear it will create it's own cavitation at higher speeds.

I am not even sure what I have, but I know I loose bottom quickly. :-[

Not to worry. It's there loss.
Funny how a difference in opinions get people so tight sometimes. Life is short, enjoy the ride.

I had to mount mine real low. It reads fine but I am getting alot of spray up from it. My lowrance also has a water speed paddle wheel that came with the bottom machine. I mounted it right beside the transducer. Both work great but spray a little more on the starboard side.
