Today, being the final day of tog season, Brian Jr and I decided to give the Cape May inlet rocks another try (we had to get rid of the crabs anyway). We got set up pretty easily in a crowd of boats that had the same idea. I had a number of bites but couldn't seem to hook one. Then, Brian Jr using one of our old style wreck rigs brought the first keeper fish over the rail, bloodying the MV2 deck (2008 Sea Chaser 2100 Offshore CC) for the first time (15" tog). I soon switched my rig to the old style rig and finally managed to hook one. As time went on, we each caught a number of throwbacks, and I caught a total of 4 keepers (the limit). Mine were 14", 18.5", 15", and 14.5". All bites were on crabs except the big one which took a large piece of salted clam. I outfished the kid 4:1.

Now that the tog season is closed, what's the next fish you can get after up in your territory?

Stripers and/or Black Drum are next on the catch list for us. I may have already missed the Spring striper run, but there are some people saying that the fish have made their run UP the river but haven't made their run back down the river yet. Let's hope they are right. The Black Drum run is usually mid may until mid june, with high tides around the new moon and full moon being best. In the Delaware Bay, the drummers can be over 100#, but most seem to fall in the 30-70 pound range. Last year, my 80# great nephew landed one that was 90#.

Not much striper activity going on out front, some being caught in rainbow channel area and in the rivers..... big drum you nephew caught......*thumbsup*
Stripers and black drum - I've yet to catch a legal size one of either. Maybe this year...
Congrats to your nephew and good luck this year *thumbsup*

Good Job kurtzr,
Say did you see where that guy caught that over 12 pound weakfish behind Avalon?
That where the paper said he got it, but I heard different ... :secret:

No I didn't see that report. Sure has been a long time since I've seen a weakfish that big. Back in the 70's, on our way home from midnight drum fishing activities over at Slaughter's Beach Delaware in late may early june, we would stop by Brandywine Lighthouse with the flood lights on, and catch the big weakies in the lights. I've seen nothing but spikes in the last 10 years, but I really don't target weakies too often.
We fished the Wildwood Reef today in our big boat (41 Albemarle). Between the 3-4 foot seas and the fog, it really wasn't a good day to fish in the Sea Chaser. Caught a lot of big tog that we couldn't keep and enough keeper sea bass for dinner.

Well it always a day late and a dollar short. But makes for good reading. Seeings that fishing is a big business around here you would think the paper would have a better report.
the fishing reports, only comes out on Thurdays and Saturdays *kickrock*

Yes, the AC Press fishing report is one of the sources I usually check. On the net, Thebassbarn.com's message board is also frequently helpful. Probably is for your area too. But nothing beats local network of others fisherman at the marina and local bait and tackle shops. The biggest problem I've got with reports in newpapers and magazines is the age of the report by the time you get to read it.
