DEFINITION: For the purposes of this chapter, the Crystal Coast is defined to include all salt and brackish waters from Cape Lookout Bight, northeast up to but not including the Pamlico Sound, and southwest to include the North Topsail Bridge on Hwy 210. The Neuse River and its tributaries, including Bay River to the east, and west up to and including approximately 3 miles north of the old train draw bridge that spans across the river from Dunn Street in New Bern. All inlets along the coastal boundaries and all offshore waters reachable from any of these included inlets. In general terms, the Crystal Coast includes the waters surrounding, but not limited to, the larger communities of Harker's Island, Beaufort, Morehead City, Emerald Isle, Swansboro, Jacksonville, New Bern, and Havelock. See maps contained in post #2, below.
INTRODUCTION: Posted by CCC of CSO founder and lead member (Dave)
First let me tell how this got started… A thread on the Welcome/Introduction board titled “Where is everybody from & what do you do??” got me thinking about trying to form a chapter that is regional in scope in order to maximize our ability to zone in and read/contribute to a specific fishing area. I was particularly encouraged when I read a string of several posts by CSO’ers, all from this general area. The timing was perfect as I learned that Harry was already poised and ready to introduce “regions” to the CSO website. We mulled over a few ideas in the past day or two and viola, Harry came through in lightening speed and here we are, up and ready to go.
It’s my opinion that Carolina Skiffs are primarily used for fishing the inshore and nearshore waters, with a few hardy soles venturing offshore in the right sea conditions. I personally like to do all of the above, but unfortunately, with the increasing price of fuel, I (and I suspect many of you) don’t always have the time or financial resources to venture all over the country just to sample some often unproductive and discouraging fishing trips, if it can be helped. Like most of you, I enjoy the whole boating experience, and sometimes I just go out to be “on the water”. But – most of the time, I’m after something to pull my line and so, what really makes me happy is catching fish to bring back for the table, to at least partially justify my expensive hobby. -Dave-
FAQ:
Can I join the CCC of CSO, even if I don't live in the Crystal Coast area or even in NC?
Sure, anyone that is a registered user at CSO can join the CCC of CSO, but understand that it is only those that participate in chapter events who will most likely benefit from membership.
If I choose not to join, can I still view & post in the CCC area? I might want to visit or fish there one day, and may have some questions that would be perfect for CCC members to help answer.
Yes, you don't have to join the CCC of CSO to read and post, nothing is secret or off limits to anyone. However ANYONE visiting the CCC forum please post ONLY CCC specific question in this area. All other questions should remain in the main CSO topic specific forums. Anyone posting a DLV question, for example (even if posted by a CCC member) in the CCC area will have the post moved from there to the DLV area.
Why are their only two chapters of the CSO, both located in NC?
So far there have only been two requests that CSO has gotten to start such a chapter. If you would like to start and lead a chapter in your area, and you have enough users interested, contact me (Harry) at webmaster@carolinaskiffowner.com (webmaster@carolinaskiffowner.com) and if we have enough members interested I would love to form more chapters.
A few points to consider for those contemplating participation in the CCC:
1) In as much as the CCC is part of the CSO, we will remain inclusive (not exclusive) of the CSO - you must be a member of the CSO to join our chapter.
2) Aside from general membership in CSO.com, all chapter members are strongly encouraged to remain (or become) active participants in the CSO forums.
3) Detailed fishing information specific to the CC area may (or may not) be volunteered to the greater population of the CSO (remember, we're fisherman) ;D We will not keep information secret to any forum member asking general questions posted to the CSO website, however, the detail and thoroughness of information offered at CSO.com will be left up the each member's discretion - as is the case now.
BENEFITS inclusive to participants of the CCC:
Communicate and network exclusively with other CCC participants and Carolina Skiff Owners that know and fish in the general area or areas that you prefer (or desire) to fish.
Have the opportunity to attend periodic meetings where participants can exchange ideas and experiences with other CCC participants and Carolina Skiff Owners, at a pre-determined location here on the Crystal Coast. Among other things, it is intended the primary purpose of these member gatherings is to meet and socialize with your fellow skiffers, and to exchange reliable information on the fishing in and around the Crystal Coast, with emphasis on helping one another to gain greater enjoyment from their boating/fishing experiences.
Have the opportunity to participate in scheduled CCC of CSO fishing tournaments.
HOW TO JOIN:
If you’d like to become an official participant, please send Dave an email at derhart@ec.rr.com .
Please put in the subject line “Request Participation In The CCC-CSO". In the body of the message, please provide the following information:
Your alias (as used on the CSO). Your (real) first name, primary email address, city and state where you reside, and the make and model of skiff and make and HP of motor on your skiff, (if you currently own one). Be prepared for a follow-up email from me, acknowledging your membership and asking additional (voluntary) personal information.
Finally, I encourage anyone that fishes, lives, or uses the Crystal Coast area of North Carolina, to become an active member of the CCC of CSO. It could lead to great things, be fun, and might hold some weight if attending a Fish & Game meeting when the time comes to changes the Rules & Reg in your area.
Respectfully,
Harry Cottrill
