Own a 16J CC. Looking for a trolling motor for both salt and freshwater use. Please provide recommendation with model, thrust and shaft length. . . Recommendations or pictures on how and where to mount are appreciated. Thanks Tim

I, too am looking for the right trolling motor for my 198dlx skiff for saltwater use. The question is how much thrust do I need? 55lbs or 70lbs ?

I am still wondering about how much Lbs thrust I need. I want enough and if I can get it with less number of batteries (55lbs) but I want enough for saltwater fishing. Please give me some advise.

I run a MinnKota on the front of my J16 with foot control, and it's a 55 lb thrust and seems about right, so my guess is you would want a 70 lb for your 198.

i would say get the most thrust you can afford, my boat came second hand with a 36lb thrust, geese its all i can do to hold against a tide or current. Im not sure on the shaft length but get all the thrust you reasonably can.

Hey
at least 70 on the 19DLX...80 would be better...Go 24 volt with two good sealed AGM batteries and an onboard charger....You wont be dissapointed...I like the Minn Kota's with the auto-pilot and wireless co-pilot...the AP is great when you fishing the bank or edge of weeds set it forget it...great holding on tides and currents too...but mount it dead center if you mount it to the side to much it will zig zag you to death...I clip my remote on my shirt pocket and can work it easy with my thumb while reeling in fish...the new Riptide ST 80 I have to put on my 198DLV even has the auto pilot on the remote so no more running up to the bow to set or change it or turn it off...I also like the idea of only having a small puck of about 5x8 inches left on the bow if I want to take it off...The new ones also have a new release and lowering system where it doesnt try to kill you when you deploy it...The only problem they are expensive at least to me...But heck as much bucks as Iam spending to get this CS the way I want it I can eat hot dogs and PB&J's for another month to get what I want...LOL...Boat=Money Pit

eodpungo,
I have a JVX 16 and mounted a Minnkota 55# 52" riptide tiller model on my bow and it has plenty of power. If you are going to use in saltwater make sure you get a saltwater model. I mounted the battery under the front deck. If you click on my name and go to my profile there are pictures there in my album of the TM. Also you can use the search feature[try trolling motor] and find a wealth of info on trolling motors. *016*

That's a j16. Motorguide saltwater series with 55 lbs thrust. More than enough power for the boat. Not sure about shaft length.

Stiiiiiiiiiiillllllllll working on it. Between the job and the kids it's hard to find any time. I thought I'd be done in 2 weeks 2 weeks ago, and now it still looks like I'm 2 weeks away from finishing.

Hey Jimbarn
I went with the 60 inch shaft...I dont have mine installed yet...been busy doing other stuuf to the skiff..the reason I went with the 60 inch is because one of my buddies has a 21DLV with the 60 inch on it...It helps in choppy water on the bay...it was also only $10 more than the 54 inch so I said what the heck...Can always cut it off some but hard to add some to a shaft at least thats what my X use to say all the time...lol

I can tell you from buying 5 boats since 2000, you need to buy the longest and most powerful thrust motor you can. Minn Kota or Motor Guide...it's up to you. I have have both. I do like the wireless 60" Motor Guide 75 I have on the Elite (in fact, it came out of the water a few times today even). But, I could not imagine anything other than the Minn Kota 101 on the Ranger. Again, buy the biggest motor you can. You can always run a bigger motor at a slower speed. But, you cannot make a small underpowered motor go faster than max in the current and wind.
