I've got to add either Smart Tabs or a hydrofoil to my 1765DLX and I've been going back & forth trying to decide which to use. Based on reviews I wanted to install the tabs (though many had great improvement with hydrofoils too) but as my boat is narrower than some I'm worried that the tabs will interfere with access to the swim ladder/platform, or the hardware would conflict with the brackets on the swim ladder.

Anyone mounted the Smart Tabs below their swim platform and if so, what do you think? I've also got to find room for the transom-mount transducer on the other side which leads me back to the hydrofoil as a solution. Thoughts?

We have tabs and the platform (on a 218dlx) and I think it'd work on yours, for "saftey's" sake, I put a bead of black silicone all around the edge of the tabs where they are sharp (11 stitches on my youngest sons leg, he has since avoided trying to stand/climb the tab, after all, some lessons have to be learned the hard way. Especially if the young ones don't listen very well..........).
The tabs give you a wide ,flat wake, and even though we tell the kids we are doing 40, they are lucky to hit 20 mph. (it works, give it a try)
Feel the edge of the hydrofoil, even if you turn the motor all the way to one side I believe (IMHO) a sharp edge will be closer to the platform than you would like.
Just my 2 pennies worth,

I run a Sting Ray hydrofoil ($50) on my Sea Chaser 175 with a Johnson 90. Previous to the J90 upgrade, I used the same hydrofoil on a Johnson 55.  With the 55, it was like adding 10 - 15 HP.  With the J90, I get a great holeshot without resorting to full power.  It also keeps the bow under control throughout the power range.  My only issue is the boat tends to list to one side, especially when negotiating a wake or rough water.  I've felt that trim tabs would give me getter side to side control than the hydrofoil.  The smart tabs are getting hard to find and some companies are closing them out making me wonder if they are worth the cost savings over the adjustable tabs.  I don't have a swim platform, so that's not an issue.
