I been at this a while, and would like to know if anybody would like to see how to tie a fly, and if so, what type of fly? Personal note here, I've been tying since 1968, usually on a vice made in the 30's till last christmass when a rotary vice found it's way under the tree (I'm still having a problem using the "spin-cycle" rotary part, old habits die HARD.).
If HArry don't have a problem with it (thank **&^&&** for fotobuket) I wouldn't mind showin a couple of step-step recipies.
(did I mention I been tyin some collage color flies for folks????) Clemson, usc, and my FAVORITE, BAR NONE, LSU!!!!!!!!!! go tiggers!!!!!!!!! (eat yer heart out Slim- boy is that gonna git some attention!!!!!!!)harharharhar 005 005 005 005 005

Sportskiff - I would love to learn how to tie files. Do you also make your own plugs (or crank baits as they call them in Texas)?

I have fond memories of our minister in NH who lived in the parsonage across the street from our home. He and his wife used to come to our house after Sunday service for drinks and conversation, and he always brought a fly or two for the kids who fished (me mostly) that he made himself. Caught more than a few trout with those files!

my kid would like it. He's always flyin ties, or er, tying flies. Deer hair all over his room.
He's got the whole set up. He has a vhs tape of some guy named Lefty, but I know he'll
like some new ideas. Me, I'm into soft plastics and live baitin. Bring it on! yay

How about a nice deceiver? They make good teasers for plugs and bucktails as well. I have a few pics of completed flies I tied but no step by step. No one wants to follow my footsteps with this stuff anyway. ;D

3. chucked up with the "knob" of thread, I use smaller thread=more winds to get the "knob" bigger. This helps to splay out the hackle.

And that guy named Lefty has forgotten more than most all of us will ever learn about tying flies, in the fly tying world that fella is one of the few. He ranks up there with the guy that invented a fishing pole. The fly above is a slight change up on one of his decivers, even the colors are along with his choices of the "better " colors. The man suggests you tie whatever you want, then tie the same using all black.
Lefty is one of the best, and if you haven't seen tapes of him you need to.
I believe BPS has tapes of him.
3/0 hook on the above flie, btw, and this is good on bass, reds (go with a 5/0 hook in this application), seatrout, blues.

I've never tried flyfishing but definitely want to give it a try. I've tied some teasers and make my own bucktails. Its cheaper and gratifying. It's also something to do when the fever hits and you can't get out to fish. Let's see some more!

Fillet1 and I participated in a fly swap on another site together, and take my word for it, he's got talent. He's only been tying for a short while, and his pictures don't do his artwork justice. His tutti frutti clouser minnow is awesome.

I'd normally be willing to show off my flies, but I drowned my camera last fall in Montauk, and haven't replaced it yet. I've been busy this winter tying many patterns; surf candies, gurglers, sand eels, large ostrich bunker patterns, snake flies, etc.

But what the heck, I've got a few images of some tarpon patterns from last winter on this computer, and a hollow fly. Here they are:

http://picasaweb.google.com/mbacchi/ToadFly/photo?authkey=SQ0_nSzZRaE#5183168731856574370

Also, I'm in the process of packing to move to the East Hampton area of Long Island in 2 weeks. So I haven't been too active on the forums. I'll be back just as soon as I get settled and the boat in the h2o.

Brevoortia is too kind. I did just get started and have gone way overboard at this point. I enjoy it. I'd probably like rod building and plug building too. Matt you need a new camera because we need boat and fish pics. Nice Toad and hollow as well. 012

You asked for it. ;D

First you need to make a pattern for the foam. This way you can make a bunch of similarly shaped flies at once start with a piece of stiff paper folded in half and trace a rectangle on it about the size of the hook (the fold is at the bottom):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/1.jpg

Then cut the rectangle out of the folded paper and start to design the shape. You want to keep the nose of the foam square (ie perpendicular to the hook shaft) and try to not have too much of the foam below the shank:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/2.jpg

You will end up with something like this that can be traced onto your foam.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/3.jpg

Here is a foam sheet from a craft store. It has an adhesive back which is not necessary. Also is a pic of the body pattern made from the paper.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/4.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/5.jpg

Using a Mustad 2/0 long shank hook, start the thread (flymaster plus) near the bend:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/6.jpg

Tie in some white bucktail all the way around the hook at the bend: (About an inch and a half)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/7.jpg

Add flash on top:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/8.jpg

Move the thread forward after the flask and tie in some pink bucktail on the top of the hook shank only. It should be as long as the white at the tips. Wrap the shank all the way to the eye and you are done with the tying.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/9.jpg

Take the foam and Gel superglue. Use small amount of the gel to adhere the folded ("creased") foam to the area to either side of the eye of the hook. You want the eye at the bottom edge of the foam and try to keep the front of the foam square to the eye:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/10.jpg

Work your way back with the gel glue (sparingly) and glue the foam together at the hook shank as far back as you can go. You will end up with a crease fly.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/11.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/12.jpg

Decorate the fly with sharpies and add eyes. Here I made a white belly a lateral line and gills.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/Fillet1/13.jpg

I then coat the fly with a thin coat of 5 minute epoxy. I use a skewer to push some epoxy inside the fly on the threads. I then brush a thin coat over the outside body and eyes.

I had asked VTHOKIE the same thing & to resize his pictures early today. I didn't want him to see this and think why is Rich allowed and Hokie not.

Reg it floats with a floating line. You can splash it like a popper or swim it across the surface. With an intermed line it may run below the surface depending on size, hook weight and how much epoxy you put on.
