It is almost time for me to spool up all of my off shore reels with new line. This year I am going with 30, 40 50, and 65 lb braid with anywhere from 300 yards to 500 yards depending on the reel. After researching and researching it looks as though itis going to cost me over $800 to put line on my offshore reels. Thank goodnees I do not have to do my inshore reels! My wife does not know how much it is costing me so, this will be our secret.:secret:

Forte are you going offshore in your skiff or another boat?

I use my Skiff. The furthest I have been out in it so far is 20 miles.

When I was a kid, all bait casting fishermen used braided line. Then spinning reels (regular and push-button) became popular with monofilament line. I haven't used any of the new braided line. Should I consider it for my inshore/nearshore fishing. What would be the advantages or disadvantages.

In my opinion, the braided line is more sensitive. Not to mention the strength to diameter ratio of the line. Moreover, Braided line is less suseptible to UV rays. For my inshore reels, I use white and yellow braided line with a flourocarbon leader just so I can see the line better. I guess a disadvantage would be the price of braided line compared to mono and the fact the there is no stretch in braid like mono. I am sure other have both good and bad opinions about braid.

Thanks, I think I'll try it on one of my reels, wouldn't be very expensive to spool my Garcia 6500-C3.

Capt Jim, where did you get your rocket launchers? I have been looking for some to put on the sides of my T-top. If I can't find any like yours, I am going to get some welded on.

RK, I got 4 on T-Top from Fishmaster, when I bought top..
The other 4 are welded on the back of my CS Leaning post..
Hope this helps...

Jim

RK, call Fishmaster, they do sell the rod holders, and they are FANTASTIC to work with! They send things out sooooo quick, if you call them now, they are probably on their way already...No, really they are great to work with!!!

Wow that's a big line bill! Luckily it should last a while.

What are you doing with the old braid? If you're just throwing away I'd like to take it off your hands.

Braided lines will cut groves in EYES & REELS of older equipment
make sure you have modern equipment for braided lines !

MY friends that use braid use Backing of MONO & just 50 or 100' of Braid !

The stuff is so expensive that they take it off & re use it putting the used side on the reel first !

Mono backing ! *kickrock*

Funny everyone uses mono backing. For my shark reels (we fish from the beach with Penn Senators, 115L, 12/0, etc) I use braid backing to extend our range with mono top shot. The main reason for this is the sandbar rub, the braid does not like it so the top end mono usually takes the brunt of that. These reels don't get used a whole lot so I'll just replace the mono each year and unspool/repack the braid.

jbrittain just bought new reels n rods and an ambassadeur will handle braid unless its got the cheapo japonese plastic line guide, his do not, they only put that on the wallyworld red 5000's.

I thought one of the main advantages with braid is increased capacity? backing with mono to reduce cost negates that.

reversing line might work in freshwater but ive been told that the salt works on it down in the spool over time even with rinsing so replace instead.

For backing I use thin foam strips that stick to the spool. Power pro has it. As for my old braid, I gave to my neighbor who is putting it on his reels. As someone stated earlier, you don not want to use braid with plastic rod eyes. I did that on one of my in shore reels when I first started using braid and the redfish ensured I had a nice groove in the lead rod eye. I have replaced all of my plastic eye rods since then.

Speaking of my new reels, had the "cabin fever" so bad today I went out in the front yard this afternoon and tried out one of my new Ambassadeur 6500 C3 reels. Boy was I amazed. So, so smooth. Fantastic! Can't wait to put them into actual use. Thinking of going to Lake Waccamaw next weekend for the pre-spring yellow perch run. It usually occurs about mid-February when the yellow perch are moving from the Waccamaw River into the lake. If you haven't had yellow perch, it's probably the best tasting and flakiest freshwater fish you will ever eat. Reminds me of grouper or halibut.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

RKForte, how old is your braided line that you have to change it?

head up to Charlotte n hit the river section of Mt Island lake for stripers. Usually good numbers of 16 - 24" fish there with less crowds n pressure than Norman. Had best luck trollin shiners w/o weight, 4 lines, staggered back. best area was main channel out from neck rd and up from there, particularly in the bends. beautiful area, plenty of wildlife too.

I only had one off shore reel with braid on it but it got twisted pretty bad by a Clark spoon with no swivel (thanks to a fishing buddy). So I am replacing it along with putting braided line on all of my other offshore reels. However, I have had braided line on my inshore reels for some years now.

Not a bad idea, I live just southeast of Charlotte, easy driving distance to Lake Norman, Tillery, Badin, Tuckertown, Mountain Island, Wylie, Hickory, Blewett Falls, etc.
